Binged the whole first season in a day. Really rooting for the show and Brosnahan tomorrow at the Globes. Nice to see ASP have a vehicle that will do well at the Emmys (still a little ticked at them ignoring Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop last year). Borstein was fantastic and should be in the running for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy next fall. Shaloub was fine and got better as the season progressed, and will probably get a nomination, but I don’t him being in my personal lineup by the end of the year.

Give Paul Thomas Anderson an Oscar.

For how long will the entire season be available for free? Just that day? A week?

Watched before the Globes and after PGA.  This gets my vote for best new streaming female-centric dramedy of the year over GLOW, although the plotting was a little scattered like that one at times. Like what was her climactic moment in the finale supposed to accomplish?  This is another one like The Room and Game of Thrones season 7 that has no concept of time.

Critics’ Choice and the Golden Globes made the right choice out of their nominees.  Rachel Brosnahan has a perfect Emmy tape with the pilot.  Funny that she only has about five percent of her pilot accent left by the finale.  Alex Borstein was brilliant, particularly as the season progressed.  Tony Shalhoub was solid in his more limited role, so I could easily see him snubbed, as the Emmys seem to expect more from veteran supporting actors and usually snub them initially at least (Mandy Patinkin, Ed O’Neill, Christian Slater, Sam Waterston twice, Martin Sheen, Laurence Fishburne).  Jane Lynch is probably in, but nothing is ever certain in those guest categories.

"I don't even believe in god, but I'm going to thank her tonight."

I like this show enough, but her performance is okay at best. I could see many other actresses doing more with that role, adding more layers, playing with tone. Michael Zegen’s performance will never be in any awards talk, but it has elements that are key to bringing truth to his scenes with Brosnahan

Really? I thought Zegen was the worst character and actor of this cast, hope he proves me wrong by season 2.

Just watched the pilot. Rachel Brosnahan is instantly engaging and compelling as lead, and I’m invested enough in both her character’s plight and this milieu in general. The production values and costuming are both great, like “Mad Men”‘s irreverent niece or distant cousin lol. It would have been great to see Evan Rachel Wood here as the older sister if she wasn’t already occupied with “Westworld,” since they look like they were separated at birth. I had no idea Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub were in this. They read a bit young for Miriam’s parents, but I guess it works out in reality. I’m watching out for Shalhoub, since this is the sort of role that could gather some Emmy attention. At some point, the conversations will start on who replaces and wins over JLD, which someone will have to do if/when she doesn’t make eligibility. This pilot is a killer submission tape with so much in it that showcases Brosnahan well. I thought she was notable in “House of Cards,” which some voters might fondly remember her from. I’d say that this pilot was overlong. I would have had the inciting incident happen first scene and then flashback to everything else. Loved the bridal toast, Shahloub’s Anne Frank joke, Alex Bernstein (didn’t expect this from her at all!), and Miriam’s drunken comedy routine. Personally, I think this could have been 30-ish minutes and less “snappy,” but let’s see where this all goes regardless. I’ll try to watch as much as I can tomorrow! More later.

Made it through episode 4 before the timeout, but I think I have another way of seeing the rest of the season. Rachel Brosnahan is still fantastic as the lead. I’m growing a bit weary of how quippy this is as a whole and how long the episodes are. From what I read about the show prior to this, it was supposed to be about how Miriam has to survive on her own after her husband leaves, which leads to discovering a groundbreaking comedy career. Right now, the meh husband is still around in Miriam’s orbit, and her rich parents live in the same apartment complex with her. It’s all light and seemingly low-stakes currently. Even her in-laws seem generally supportive of her. Kevin Pollak really pops here, at least as much as Tony Shalhoub does. Luke Kirby was so good on “Rectify,” but here his accent seems super-overworked as Lenny Bruce. Miriam’s comedy routines aren’t all that OMG funny to me either. Observationally sarcastic, but I’m not sure about all-out funny. I’m really liking Alex Borstein though and finding her just as Emmyworthy as Brosnahan. Anyways, I’ll report back if/when I finish off binging season 1!

What a fabulous show! Borstein better be nominated. And I would think, given their prior adoration for Monk, Shalhoub should be a shoo-in for an Emmy nom.

I’ve seen 4 episodes and someone needs to explain me why this show is so great. I don’t see anything special; the whole story doesn’t sound particularly refreshing, or insightful, or witty, or exciting. The only thing I really like is the work of the direction; the way they move the camera and how they compose the scenes is very competent and better than most shows. Also, Rachel Brosnahan will be a deserving nominee. But beside that, everything is fine and nothing is great.

Same, I watched the entire first episode, was very bored, and decided not to continue.

It’s only Brosnahan’s performance that’s good. The show is average at best.

I really liked the second half of the season. It of course had less set-up and exposition. But there was also more balance in tone, story and character, and it was generally funnier. It’s not a favorite. But it is overall a good season of television. I could see it becoming a favorite in future seasons.
