The Middle is one of my favourite shows on TV and I am truly surprised at how little Emmy Recognition it has gotten, I feel it deserves to be nominated for Best Comedy Series ever since it began and I think all of the cast should have gotten recognition from the Emmys, especially Patricia Heaton and Eden Sher. Do you guys think it deserved to get recognition from the Emmys all these seasons?

Yes. I always thought The Middle was underrated and better than Modern Family. No Emmy love, but hey at least it’s done really well at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Some shows can’t even say that.

It would certainly be in my top 6 and there have been seasons when I would have recognized Heaton and Flynn. I find Sher’s character just a bit much so she wouldn’t make my cut. However, this is not a show that great numbers of entertainment industry workers in California or New York are likely to identify with. It reminds me of all those years Roseanne didn’t win, even when it was far and away the best comedy series of the year. Middle class family comedy doesn’t play in Hollywood. Roseanne only got nominated because it was in the days before all the cable comedies increased the size of the pool so much.

I agree that this is one of  my favorite shows on television. All the actors are fantastic and I am sad they never caught on at the Emmys. Patricia Heaton is great but Eden Sher is just amazing on this show. She goes toe to toe with 2 time winner Heaton. I am hoping that the weak year for comedy perhaps boosts their chances but I can only dream.

Roseanne was never nominated for Best Comedy Series.

This thread begs the question — how did Malcolm in the Middle, a middle class family comedy, get nominated for Best Comedy Series back in 2001?

^^Oh, you’re right. I was thinking it did one year around the time that Barr won, but I guess not. And Roseanne was further an odd case because they seemed to really like the cast, but not the show.

Not sure why they really responded to Malcom, other than the fact that many of the plots of Roseanne and The Middle revolve around their financial struggles and Malcolm wasn’t as focused on that. Also, Malcolm was a little ahead of its time in terms of single-camera network sitcoms. They also liked The Wonder Years, which was sort of in the same boat. The Middle also probably just suffers from the glut of cable comedies that now typically grab a slot or two.

Malcolm is one of my fav shows ever but I think I have an answer to that. It was definately ahead of its time but it also was just so off the wall too. The Middle is tame compared to Malcolm in terms of it’s characters.

I think this has been one of the best comedies on television since the show began. So that’s four, in July it will be five times the Emmys have ignored this show and has gone instead with things like Modern Family, Big Bang, Nurse Jackie and others.

I remember back when the show started, the reviews from this board were awful and A LOT of people seemed to be very much against Patricia Heaton becuase of some sort of republican political thing, I don’t remember anymore. I remember some people even saying it was awful that somebody like Heaton was doing a voice over for a show. Apparently even her voice was a problem. That’s how silly it got.

I guess she got to a lot of people along the way because somebody who managed to be such an Emmy favorite for Raymond and got so much publicity for Back to You as if she was tv’s biggest star, can’t just be this ignored when it comes to The Middle.

Sure the show started off as too Malcolm, to slow or too afraid to really push it with the comedy, but it definitely got better during its first season and went far beyond that. Patricia Heaton has deserved a nomination all five years, and Eden Sher has had better tapes than most of the nominees and even some winners. She has been comedy gold and should have been nominated for Supporting Actress a couple of times already. She should have been a very VERY easy bias breaker when it comes to Emmys and kids (she hasn’t been a kid for a while).

It’s ridiculous that a show that has basically done better than most comedies have done in ratings and has done it all on its own with absolutely no help, gets to be this underrated, as if nobody knows it exists.

This season has been pretty eh, but previous years would have definitely made my lineup for Series, Actor, Actress, and Supporting Actress. Hell Patricia Heaton would make my lineup this year.

So it’s the middle class aspect? I think with Malcolm it was about boys rather than class issues and that helped it.  Roseanne got acting nominations and wins for Laurie Metcalf (3 times) and Roseanne (once), but there was much less competition then.

I hate Patricia Heaton’s politics but I love her acting choices as Frankie Heck. Eden Sher is my favorite comedienne on television and has been from the great first season onwards. Atticus Shaffer is hilarious and has deserved nominations. Neil Flynn is quite endearing. Charlie McDermott is the only weak link for me but that’s more because I dislike Axl. The show is so well produced, directed and written and it has deserved nominations that have gone to far inferior shows. I love this show and it’s my favorite current comedy. It’s always disappointing when the list comes out and The Middle is MIA in all the comedy categories ):

Actually, there was a ton of competition back then. Roseanne managed some Emmy success because throughout most of its run it was ridiculously popular. It also got solid reviews and due to its leading lady’s antics and the controversy surrounding certain episodes it stayed in the headlines. Still wasn’t enough to net a series nod however.

Heaton was one of the most high profile bush supporters in the TV industry and that’s an unforgivable sin to many but would it carry over this long? And would it affect everyone on the middle? Poison voters against from ever watching the middle at all?
