I wondered how Edie Falco, Laura Linney, and Mary Louise Parker will fare in this year’s Emmy race. There has been so much attention toward the HBO ladies, namely Laura Dern, Julia Louis Dreyfus, and Lena Dunham. Out of the Showtime ladies, though , who has the best shot at getting a nomination? My bet would be on Falco, who has been doing stellar work this year, but I just don’t know who she could replace in this lineup:
Julia Louis Dreyfus
Laura DernMay 9, 2012 at 8:50 am #243718
My guess is it is Dunham vs Deschannel for that last spot. I don’t see Falco, Linney or Parker factoring in. I suppose I could see Fey being left out, 30 Rock is having a terribly unfunny season. They maybe have two episodes worthy of a Series nomination.May 9, 2012 at 9:09 am #243719
I haven’t watched season 4 of Nurse Jackie yet, but regardless of the quality, never count out Edie Falco. The same goes for Laura Linney. Mary-Louise Parker seems to be gone for good. Tina Fey is vulnerable this year.
And I still don’t think Zooey Deschanel will make it in the midst of these veterans vying for spots. Lena Dunham looks more likely to get in than Deschanel, but I don’t think she will make it either.
My prediction for now
1. Amy Poehler
2. Julia Louis-Dreyfus
3. Laura Dern
4. Laura Linney
5. Edie Falco
6. Tina Fey
Alternates: Melissa McCarthy, Lena DunhamMay 9, 2012 at 9:20 am #243720
My lineup would like like this:
I like Dern in Enlightened, but her performance is not quite the same as the aforementioned ladies’. I still feel, however that McCarthy is vulnerable, and someone like Deschanel can make it in, even though I think Linney’s chances are better than hers.May 9, 2012 at 9:23 am #243721
The only Showtime lady that deserves an Emmy nomination this year is Emmy Rossum. Case closed (for me).May 9, 2012 at 9:36 am #243722
I have both Edie Falco and Laura Linney making it in.May 9, 2012 at 9:58 am #243723
I think Deschanel will get in. My guess is Fox is gonna campaign hard for her, and she’ll benefit from so many veterans being in dramedies (after all, it’s unlikely they will fill most or half of the line-up with more dramatic performances).May 9, 2012 at 11:46 am #243724
Parker is definitely gone for good. Falco is likely to be out thanks to a bunch of new contenders. But I can’t see them hand out only one nomination to Linney. It’s freakin’ Laura Linney afterall. They love her.
I don’t buy all that Deschanel talk. The Globes might dig her schtick, but Emmys??! Naw, I don’t so.May 9, 2012 at 12:35 pm #243725
Falco is the only one with a shot, which is sad because Parker deserves it the most.May 9, 2012 at 2:18 pm #243726
I also have Linney in my top 6, she’s the only one from the showtime ladiesMay 9, 2012 at 2:21 pm #243727
The only Showtime lady that deserves an Emmy nomination this year is Emmy Rossum. Case closed (for me).
I’m going to co-sign this.May 9, 2012 at 2:29 pm #243728
Emmy Rossum is the one that should be getting nominated if only because she’s yet to have some sort of recognition for this show and role and it’s incredibly deserved. However, that’s in the drama categories, this is comedy.
I think Falco still makes it in, I see Fey nominated until the end, but she can’t be more vulnerable and even though 30 Rock has had some classic episodes this season and she will always deserve this nod, she does have enough Emmys and nominations. I don’t think Deschanel is as locked as people think, and Lena Dunham will likely get more votes than she will for that young vote among so many veterans like Poehler, Falco, Fey, Linney, Dern, Plimpton and even McCarthy.
I would be great for this day to finally come and see where the hell we end up, because the category is packed.May 9, 2012 at 2:38 pm #243729
^I understand, but perhaps the title should be changed to specify that they only mean the comedy categories.
For comedy, I think Falco has a very strong shot at a nomination.
Overall, it would please me to no end to hear Emmy Rossum’s name called as a nominee for Drama Actress for ‘Shameless’, in which she is incredible.May 9, 2012 at 2:49 pm #243730
Does anyone think that any of the ladies from Desperate Housewives could make it in? With this being the last season, alot of people who stopped watching over the years have watched this season. I think that could benefit. If 1 or 2 ladies from Housewives deserve to make it in, its Marcia Cross and Teri Hatcher. While in past seasons I considered them the weakest of the 4 ladies, this season Hatcher and DEFINITELY Cross have been excellent this season. But Marcia Cross deserves to make it in more than Hatcher.May 9, 2012 at 6:48 pm #243731
I believe Falco has the slight edge since “Nurse Jackie” has been getting good reviews lately for this current season, and it’s a show the Emmys liked, even if for a brief period. Linney’s show is pratically dead, both in terms of critics and in terms of audience, and the whole “Laura Linney on TV!” hype is pratically non existent now. And Falco is just as loved (if not more) than Linney. After all, she has won 4 times before. So while I think it will be very close, I think Falco is just a little bit more likely to get in.
Regarding Zooey, I don’t even think it’s a matter of schtick. The way i see it, it’s a matter of which spot each actress fills. You’ll likely only have one HBO dramady lady since those shows are not very popular (meaning it’s either Dern or Dunham) and probably one Showtime dramady veteran since those shows have been airing for a while and lost the novelty around them (meaning Falco or Linney). Dreyfus is HBO, but it’s pure comedy and she’s playing the vice president, so of course she’s in. Fey and Poehler will also probably come back, unless a major surprising snub is on the way.
So, I see 5 spots so far. There’s one open. It could go to McCarthy, Plimpton or Deschanel. Between the 3, I give Deschanel the slight edge. The show has been surprisingly well reviewed, and I still think Fox will try really hard to make this happen, since it’s a hit show and she’s still seen somewhat as a film star. The other two are very much possible too.
Anyway, so far that’s my point of view, and it could still change, but I do think Deschanel has a better shot than most people think (and I say that even though I despise that show).
