The Unlimited Ballot Experiment

Might end up being the most boring thread ever but I was thinking it could be interesting to get a gauge on how many acting contenders people on here would select in each category if they were an Emmy voter and had an unlimited ballot.

Mine are below and I have to say that having gone into the experiment with an attitude that I would probably be far stingier than Emmy voters I ended up having some categories where I selected an embarrassing number of contenders. This is mostly due to really forcing myself to get into the mindset of having an unlimited number of selections available. I also alternated each category as to whether I went A-Z or Z-A if anyone wants to do that as well. Anyway…

Comedy Actor: 5 selections

Drama Actor: 4 selections

Limited Actor: 5 selections

 

Comedy Actress: 7 selections

Drama Actress: 7 selections

Limited Actress: 6 selections

 

Comedy Supporting Actor: 7 selections

Drama Supporting Actor: 8 selections

Limited Supporting Actor: 10 selections

 

Comedy Supporting Actress: 15 selections (!)

Drama Supporting Actress: 13 selections (!)

Limited Supporting Actress: 14 selections (!)

 

Comedy Guest Actor: 5 selections

Drama Guest Actor: 5 selections

 

Comedy Guest Actress: 6 selections

Drama Guest Actress: 3 selections

 

Maybe once everyone has done theirs I’ll do an average for each of the categories to see if any standout as packed with an overflow of “I can’t not vote for them” contenders (and so are more likely to be the ones where random nominations emerge). Also, I kindly ask that any users who saw this and wanted to make a snide comment about only picking the actual number for each category refrain from doing so. Not only do Emmy voters probably not know how many are in each category this year thanks to the proportional rule change but I’d like to think that most people here wouldn’t be excessive if they were actual voters anyway. Obviously, I wouldn’t actually choose 14 supporting actresses but the point is to consider how an Emmy voter might if they’re just scrolling down their ballot selecting whoever they really liked.

I found myself choosing performers that I’ve never thought would make it anywhere near the Emmys and I didn’t choose a lot of frontrunners. Also, the Limited Series supporting races are basically only Watchmen and Mrs. America.

Like Luca said, this Is actually a very intersting thread. I abused of the unlimited ballot I’ll admit. This was a crazy year full of amazing performances and basically a HUGE amount of those performances are equally deserving. I don’t watch many comedy shows and basically all of the dramas that I watch are female driven. I think that reflected a lot on my ballot 🙂

I’ve talked to several voters in recent years when this system started. Some said they mark everything and everyone they enjoy watching. Others said they are very strategic, maybe selecting 3-4 per category so that each one of those has more weight on their own ballot.
