For Season Two of HBO anthology series “True Detective,” do you want to see another male pairing, i.e. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, or do you hope the producers branch out to showcase female partners or even a male-female duo?
Whatever the case, give us your dream cast and brief character descriptions for Season Two below. (Some of your suggestions may be included in a future article at Gold Derby!)
My dream cast:
Ian McShane and Jennifer Garner. He’s the grizzled detective ready for retirement; she’s his estranged daughter who gets transferred to his precinct against both of their wishes because of her prior knowledge on the case.March 8, 2014 at 10:41 pm #312381
Great topic Marcus!!!
I would love to see a female pairing as well.
I like the idea a contrasting pair…how about Viola Davis as a seasoned detective paired with an agent from INTERPOL to solve a case with international implications. The INTERPOL agent would be played by the sublime Olivia Coleman, who would have been my choice for an Emmy if Broadchurch had been eligible in the US.March 9, 2014 at 3:16 am #312382
Here are my top choices:

- Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart
- Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien
- Madonna and Elton John
Jim Parsons and Rosie O’DonnellMarch 9, 2014 at 6:30 am #312384
On Twitter I saw someone suggest Kyle MacLachlan and Sherilyn Fenn, which would be amazing because it would basically be our only chance at a pseudo-Twin Peaks continuation. And assuming they keep the same creepy atmosphere, it would fit even more!
They would play older detectives whose judgment is increasingly questioned by their precinct, which seems to get younger and younger every year, as Fenn’s character notes. MacLachlan and Fenn’s characters have been partners for decades, but only solving relatively minor crimes, until one day they get a crack at a big case involving multiple gay teens committing suicide in the same general area. MacLachlan’s character doesn’t think they’re open-and-shut cases, and convinces Fenn’s character that there must be something more to it. They are forced to deal with office politics and a corrupt bureaucracy. Meanwhile, MacLachlan’s character is harboring a secret love for Fenn’s character, but she doesn’t have the same feelings for him.
To summarize, the logline would be “KYLE MacLACHLAN and SHERILYN FENN reunite as a pair of older detectives from a sleepy suburban town who believe a series of gay suicides in the area may be something more sinister in TRUE DETECTIVE Season 2.”
Okay I’m done!March 9, 2014 at 7:33 am #312385
Aaron Paul and either Bryan Cranston or Kathryn ErbeMarch 9, 2014 at 8:44 am #312386
Bruce Dern and Jack NicholsonMarch 9, 2014 at 9:05 am #312387
Helen Mirren and Sandra Bullock
Robert Downey Jr. and Mark RuffaloMarch 9, 2014 at 9:15 am #312388
Time for two women next season. Regina King’s my first choice. Pair her up with a veteran actress to counter. Frances McDormand? Sigourney Weaver?March 9, 2014 at 9:57 am #312389
Honestly, I’d love to see Lupita Nyong’o paired with someone – maybe someone like the aforementioned McDormand or WeaverMarch 9, 2014 at 10:01 am #312390
Helen Mirren and Judi Dench.March 9, 2014 at 10:10 am #312391
Jodie Foster and Sandra Bullock, with Jodie in a Rust-like role and Sandra as the Marty character, married with kids and always hitting on hot guys (with much male nudity).March 9, 2014 at 11:25 am #312392
There’s no reason to continue if they’re just gonna repeat the same characters and dynamics. Season two should almost feel like a different series.March 9, 2014 at 12:36 pm #312393
Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
Meryl Streep and Glenn Close.
Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander.March 9, 2014 at 12:37 pm #312394
That True Detective Season 2 tag on twitter a few weeks back was not only hilarious, but had some excellent ideas.
Let’s get two women partners. I don’t care who. Just make it feel like a different show. No need for another Rust.
