To the dozens, hundreds, or perhaps even thousands of members of the TV Academy’s performers branch who visit this forum. Last year frustrated by what I saw as “safe uninspired punditry” on this site, I appealed to your more rebellious nature with a primal scream of a post. The “Experts” and editors were falling in line with the same tired names of repeat winners of previous years. I had to advocate for the numerous worthy women who had yet to win and were at risk of being overlooked. Claire Foy/Keri Russell, Thandie Newton, Vanessa Kirby, Alex Borstein, Samira Wiley, and even 1980’s own Christina Pickles were just some of the women I planted my flag for. And many of them won in thrilling well received upsets. It was simply glorious. In this new voting system it is not critics or journalists or awards “experts” who have the power. It is YOU. The performers branch can vote for whoever the hell they want to vote for any reason. Since 2016, we have seen thrilling inspired choices and deserving women win under this new system with a real effort to spread the wealth. I once again this year want to appeal to whatever member of the TV Academy eligible to vote who reads these forums with the names of several worthy women in this super strong field. I even included some guys! I feel the time has come for them to be called Emmy winners.

In the past 2 weeks, I watched the full seasons of EVERY female nominated in the top 8 to get a good understanding on every category. I watched the entire seasons of Fleabag, Barry, Mrs. Maisel, Russian Doll, Dead to Me, Schitt’s Creek, Chernobyl, When They See Us, Fosse/Verdon, Escape at Dannemora, and The Act. I watched Game of Thrones, Veep, Killing Eve, This is Us, House of Cards, HTGWM, and Glow when they aired. I have seen all the hosts nominated for SNL. I watched the nominated women’s episodes from Handmaid’s Tale, The Good Place, and American Horror Story. And I even forced myself to finish Sharp Objects and Ozark even though I didn’t connect with either show. So I am coming at this informed.

I am a gay male so I care solely and exclusively about the 8 main actress categories. I start with a basic principle. Most of the nominees if not all are deserving of a win. As you performers know, best performance is totally subjective. So I just don’t take performance into account. I take into account the overdue factor and lean to first time winners. I take into account the timing of the persons career and their narrative. Is it the right time to see them up there holding that trophy? I take into account the competition. How strong is the category? Should other factors come into play?

As always vote your conscience. I hope I give you something to think about with these women I am advocating for this year. I do it out of passion. I love the Emmys. I wouldn’t sit there and watch hours of television for this sole purpose for any other reason that just wanting to get these things right. When the right lady wins, it’s a rush of adrenaline. When things go off the rails, it can be deflating. The women I believe you should strongly consider giving your vote are in the post below this.

The Case for the “Clear Winner” (3 categories where the performance, the competition, the narrative, and the strength of their show all come together)

TV Miniseries Actress: Michelle Williams, Fosse/Verdon

Ms. Williams performance is one of those special performances that comes around during a TV season that demands recognition. It was as if the spirit of Gwen Verdon inhabited the actress. Ms. Williams performance as Gwen Verdon like Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies and Sarah Paulson in OJ is just one of those special performances that is undeniable. She sings, she dances, she moves you, she’s strong yet vulnerable, and she transforms her appearance and voice. Ms. Williams has yet to win an award from her peers despite being one of the best actresses of her generation. It is really the only place to honor Fosse/Verdon. This vote just makes sense.

A clip of Ms. Williams performance- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsMc_Q-qqls

Drama Guest Actress: Phylicia Rashad, This is Us

This was one of the easiest endorsements for me this year. Ms. Rashad a television legend who has yet to win an Emmy gives the best performance in this category. Her appearance on This is Us is what every guest appearance should be. She transitions effortlessly into the storyline and show. The entire episode involved around Rashad and her relationship with the young and current version of her daughter. Ms. Rashad did not win for her iconic Claire Huxtable on The Cosby Show as the multiple nominees from such shows as The Golden Girls and Kate and Allie were hard to beat in a tape system. A vote for Ms. Rashad is also a way to honor her on screen daughter Susan Kelechi Watson who was unjustly snubbed. In terms of performance, competition, timing, being overdue this win also just makes sense. With This is Us likely to lose everywhere else, this could be the win for the show.
    A Clip of Ms. Rashad’s appearance : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9N_RPHEINY

Comedy Guest Actress: Kristin Scott Thomas, Fleabag

Why ignore the Goldderby odds? Well for starters the best guest actress in a comedy performance sits in 6th place in the odds. Ms. Thomas deserves to win this category for her epic monologue on menopause. It can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZrnHnASRV8 It is the type of money scene in a guest tape that would make for a slam dunk win in the old tape system. Ms. Thomas has long been one of the more underappreciated and overlooked performers in the industry. Despite a slew of great performances she spots no major industry wins for her acting. We can change that this September. This is a great way for Team Fleabag in the branch to plant their flag for this fantastic show. I would also not frown about a win here for Sandra Oh for those who do not want to vote for her in Drama Actress.

The Case for the “IT GIRL” in a strong category

Best Actress in a Comedy Series: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag

To me the 2 funniest and stand out performances in this strong field were given by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Catherine O’Hara. I would not begrudge a win for Ms. O’Hara at all especially with the chance to give Ms. Waller-Bridge the win in writing. But I need to be realistic as Ms. Waller-Bridge is probably the only one who could beat Ms. Dreyfus. And Waller-Bridge may not win writing. The best Comedy I watched in my viewing was Fleabag by far. It was funny, poignant, sad, enjoyable, and wonderfully written. So it goes without saying in this strong field I would lean toward the creator, writer, and star of the show. I have supported most of JLD’s wins but come on, this field is way too strong to justify a 7th straight win. Remember she has 6 wins for acting and 3 for producing Veep. That’s 9 folks. That’s enough. Especially in this field.

The Case for the Overdue in a flawed field

TV Drama Supporting Actress: Lena Headey, Game of Thrones

I have heard all the arguments against Ms. Headey. The lack of screen time, her unsatisfying death, standing at a railing etc. etc. I would argue Ms. Headey was given as much to do as Ms. Shaw and Ms. Turner and nearly on par with Ms. Christie and yet they have not received nearly the criticism and in fact many think Ms. Shaw will win. Perhaps because Ms. Headey’s character is the one so fascinating that fans feel cheated when she is not on the screen. I would also argue that Ms. Headey performance in The Belles is just as good as any of the episodes that her competition may submit. I would also argue that the performers have awarded nominees recently like Ben Mendelson and Margo Martindale for what was clearly not their most to do seasons. Lets be honest. This is not the strongest category of the year. In fact most of these women would not have been nominated had Big Little Lies, The Handmaid’s Tale, Westworld, and The Crown been eligible. Ms. Garner and Ms. Williams had the most to do but I did not find either to be undeniable or so good that I was rushing to cast my vote for them. So for me it comes down to this. Which one of these 6 characters most deserves to be an Emmy winning role? . Considering Ms. Headey is on her 5th nomination without a win, I would suggest it’s her based on the totality of her work on Game of Thrones for the last 8 years and the general weakness of the field.

TV Miniseries Supporting Actress: Emily Watson, Chernobyl

Ms. Watson gave a rock solid performance in what turned out to be the television event of the year. Ms. Watson like so many others I am advocating for has yet to win a major industry award from her peers despite a career of great performances. This category isn’t exactly strong so it would be a great place to reward Chernobyl. One could not be upset if Ms. Arquette got a win here for her great year. But she was a lead and as she already is an Emmy and Oscar winner I will root for Ms. Watson to finally hear her name called.

The case for flip a coin in some competitive categories

TV Drama Actress: Sandra Oh or Jodie Comer, Killing Eve

I would not be upset if Ms. Wright finally wins for House of Cards. It’s a shame she never won and she succeeded in a very difficult circumstance this year. But I do believe Ms. Oh or Ms. Comer deserves the prize as the major win of the night for Killing Eve. Both are very strong and different performances. Comer’s certainly flashier as the psychopathic killer. And it would be a historic win for Ms. Oh as the first actress of Asian descent to win the prize. These opportunities don’t come around often. Ms. Oh is an 10 time nominee who has yet to win. She is a 4 time nominee this year alone. I hope voters resist the urge to award Ms. Linney again as she is a 4 time winner.

TV Supporting Actress Comedy: Betty Gilpin, Glow or Anna Chulmsky, Veep or Sian Clifford, Fleabag

The female comedy categories are so strong that I almost skipped them because you can’t go wrong. I rule out Ms. McKinnon and Ms. Borstein who I advocated the last 3 years. They both won 2 times. I also would pass on Ms. Hinkle. I just didn’t find the performance funny in the slightest and her storyline really went no where after an interesting start. Ms. Olivia Colman feels more like a guest actress here. She’s hilarious but I imagine it would be best to wait to award her for The Crown. Ms. Goldberg is fine and has her killer pool monologue. But I will shout out both Chulmsky and Clifford here. Chulmsky is a 6 time nominee who has never won and was solid as always. I imagine it sucks to sit there 6 times and hear someone else’s name called. Right performers? How would you feel? Clifford was amazing on Fleabag and as good as the more famous Oscar winner Colman so I have to give her the edge. Gilpin is a bit of a longshot here as her show is the only one not nominated. But her performance in her nominated episode was one of the best I watched this year.

The Case for some talented ladies in Random Categories

    Narrator: Angela Bassett, The Flood

Ms. Bassett is nominated as Best Narrator! She is a 5 time nominee who has yet to win! No major industry wins yet. Let’s give her something voters! Wouldn’t you want Angela to narrate your life? I would!

Best Short Form Series: Hack into Broad City

A win for Broad City in the Short Form series would give both Illana Glazer and Abbi Jacobsen long overdue wins for their comedic talents! Neither have won an Emmy for their work and this is the last chance.

Special Shout out to four talented guys who caught my attention

Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series: Luke Kirby, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

I will break my actressing addiction to pay tribute to 4 guys who also deserve to win. Like Ms. Rashad and Ms. Scott Thomas, Mr. Kirby’s guest performance was exactly the type of instant impact and scene stealing memorable work you want to see. Mr. Kirby gives a mesmerizing and intoxicating performance as Lenny Bruce. Ms. Brosnahan’s character couldn’t take her eyes off him during his standup scene. Neither could I. Neither will you. This is the type of work that should win a guest category, not the A Listers slumming it up in uneven SNL episodes.

Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series: Anthony Carrigan, Barry

If Fleabag was my favorite Comedy series, Barry was a close second. And a big reason for that was Carrigan’s NOHO Hank. A crazy character so reminiscent of past champions of this category (Michael Richards, Tony Hale, etc), Carrigan provides most of the comedic moments of Barry.

Best Actor in a Limited Series: Jharrel Jerome, When They See Us

I had to stop the 4th episode halfway and check imdb.com to see if the same actor played both young and old Korey Wise. If When They See Us does win Best Limited Series, Mr. Jerome’s performance will be a big reason why.

Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series: Paul Dano, Escape at Dannemora

The underrated Mr. Dano once again adds another great performance to his young career. How about a win finally?

So those are my passion picks this year Performers branch. If you made it this far thank you for taking the time to read it. As always vote your conscience but I hope you give some of the above performers strong consideration! Good luck.

What a crock. Maya Rudolph is the class of this field. Bad enough Fleabag got into the Emmy dance to begin with.

I wouldn’t mind a Ms. Rudolph win. Especially to reward your fervent Good Place support which should be admired by all. As long as it’s not Lynch or Shaw.
