This is why we need Carrie to sweep for The Gilded Age.
Just her performance in The Book of Nora was so heartbreaking. Probably the best performance in a television episode ever. I will write a full review of the show later (I still need to pause and have a think about it!) but it’s honestly one of the century’s best.

January 10, 2021 at 5:46 am #1203973813After being amazed by Damon Lindelof’s vision in Watchmen, I also watched The Leftovers last year and I didn’t like it that much. The first season was okay but the last two seasons were too much to just tell the story of what happens to people when their beliefs are tested. I wished the plot lines in seasons two and three meant more than showing the fragility of belief. That overpraised International Assassin episode meant nothing to me. Carrie Coon was good but personally it wasn’t a very memorable performance. Even though they are two completely different shows, The OA does a much better job in absurd and surreal storytelling.

I was just joking, and even though I think it’s one of the best ever shows, I wasn’t offended. It’s the unpopular opinions thread after all, and not everyone likes the same things.

Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)January 31, 2021 at 2:09 am #1204010496After rewatching Succession, I think Brian Cox should have won. That car scene alone when his eyes watered while speaking on Scotland was just beautiful.
I love the character Kendall, but I feel he was a bit too much of a scared daddy’s boy in season 2. I do understand the arch though.

Yikes. Homecoming looked pretty thanks to Tod Campbell, and Stephan James and Hong Chau were very good but it dragged. Mr. Robot season 1 is jaw dropping, peerless, shocking. I often wish I could rewatch it with a blank slate.

Mr Robot never feels like it knows what it’s trying to say, particularly about capitalism. Esmail also completely drops entire subplots and characters (the Wellick duo for example) when he doesn’t know what to do with them. The show throws a lot of ideas out there, but fails to explore them fully. When it’s good, it’s very very good, but the low points are very low.
The first season of Homecoming is smaller in scope, but is executed almost perfectly. The writing is better, the direction is better, and the cast is also a lot better. Take Cannavale for example (he starred in both shows) – his performance in Homecoming is so much better than in Mr Robot. Roberts, James, Chau, Whigham, Jean-Baptiste, and Allen White all deliver some of their career-best work, whereas I only found Malek and BD Wong delivering consistently worthy work in Mr Robot.
It should be said that I’m specifically talking about season 1 of Homecoming. The second season (which Esmail wasn’t heavily involved in creating) was very disappointing, and the show would do well to have Mr Robot’s four season run.

Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)February 2, 2021 at 11:22 pm #1204015744I think Homecoming is perfect- both seasons. I definitely missed Roberts but I felt Alvarez seamlessly took over from Esmail in the directing department. The shows distinct and unique tone must have been challenging to on but I thought he matched Esmail’s look completely.
How both seasons of it didn’t score nominations in every craft department is beyond me. I will never be convinced Roberts didn’t deserve to win. Cannavale deserved to win too.
The HFPA responded very well to it in season 1, I wonder if a few surprise nominations are coming its way tomorrow. You’d think they’d want to hurry and nominate Janelle Monae.
