Reminder: the earlier announced recombining of Talk and Sketch Series into a single Variety Series category was reversed. There will be separate Variety Talk Series and Variety Sketch Series categories in 2021.

Disney+ & Netflix coming to dominate the Pre-Recorded category between the former’s music specials (Beyoncé, Hamilton, Taylor Swift) and the latter’s comedy specials (Death to 2020, Kevin Hart and whoever else drops). Prime Video could also make a play as well with the Fenty Fashion Show and Yearly Departed.

The Grammys should be winning Variety Special (Live). After 40 years of overblown, stuffed “Grammy moments” from Ken Elrich, Ben Winston finally made not only a watchable show but an outstanding show.

Same, I can’t believe she created two cultural resets only to lose to Carpool Karaoke, TWICE!!.

Didn’t treatise this until now but Yvonne Orji’s HBO comedy special “Momma, I Made It!” was released June 6 2020 (thought it was late April) so it’s eligible.

    Could probably do well.

The HBO West Wing election special just the DGA, this is something that needs to be considered? Or did it just win because it was directed by the Guilds president (Schlamme)

“Derek Deglaudia’s In & Of Itself” will apparently be Hulu’s third biggest push this season (after Handmaid’s & Pen15), as those three (and Taste the Nation) are the only programming with separate pages in their FYC booklet.

The special is also directed by the legendary Frank Oz.

Apple TV+ has Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special. It didn’t do much in terms of the guilds (besides make-up/hair) but it could be a potential nominee for Variety Special (Pre-Recorded).

Do the Grammys just win Variety Live by default?

There’s no Tonys, the Emmys don’t submit themselves, The Weeknd’s SB was kinda underwhelming, Oscars were a mess, less said about the Globes the better and the only Live Network/Musical production was Matthew Morrison as the Grinch (yikes).

And I’m doubtful they’d go for things like The Disney Holiday Singalong, HBCU Homecoming Celebration or the VaxLive concert when they never did last year peak-pandemic (aka ones people watched). And I seriously doubt they’d be as adventurous as to nominated The TikTok Ratatouille Musical or the plethora of virtual concerts (Dua Lipa, BTS, Billie Eilish etc).
