Often we see performers from shows who either having unbaity roles or minor roles coattail themselves to nominations due to their show’s popularity. I was wondering what do we all think are the weirdest coattail nominations ever? A few of mine off the top of my head :

    – Chris Sullivan, Emmys 2019
    – Fiona Shaw, Emmys 2019 (for both Fleabag and Killing Eve)
    – Marsha Stephanie Blake, Emmys 2019
    – Kim Bodnia, BAFTA TV Awards 2019
    – John Travolta, Emmys 2016
    – Paul Giammati, Emmys 2014
    – Kelly Jenrette, Emmys 2018
    – Martha Plimpton, Emmys 2012
    – Cherry Jones, Emmys 2018 and 2019

FYC Emmys : Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve"), Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials"), Russell Tovery ("Years and Years"), Helena Bonham Carter ("The Crown") & The Crown, His Dark Materials, Years and Years, Succession and The Affair in all categories. The Politician : Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bette Midler and Judith Light.

FYC Goldderby Awards : MAURA TIERNEY AND DOMINIC WEST FOR THE FINAL SEASON OF THE AFFAIR

    – John Travolta, Emmys 2016

Not sure I agree with this one. Sure some people hated his performance but some people loved it and he went onto get Golden Globe and Critics Choice nods so it’s not as if he just snuck in at the Emmys based on the strength of the show. I’d actually say David Schwimmer, for the same show, was the big coattail that year.

Also, to answer your actual question, the weirdest is surely and forever will be:

(Even if we now know exactly how it happened)

While her nomination isn’t that weird considering her celebrity status and being a principle on such an enormous show, I really hated last year’s Sophie Turner coattail nomination, as I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say that her performance was nomination worthy.

It’s pretty telling that she’s the only actress in that field last year who had no one predicting her to win.

Sophie Turner deserved a nom for s6 so I don’t mind her getting it for the final season of the show.

She was deserving for season 6, but her missing out wasn’t a terrible crime either, so I still don’t care for her making it in over more deserving women that time.

    – Martha Plimpton, Emmys 2012

Martha Plimpton was NOT a coattail nom. She was fantastic on The Good Wife and should have had multiple noms. Makeup nomination for not being nominated for seasons 1 & 2? Maybe. Coattail, never. Sorry, I’m sensitive about my Martha 🙂

I never understood why they never brought her back. Even if she was regular on other shows , she could of guest as others did. She had such a great character. Wonder if there was issue behind scene, it’s not like that show had perfect behind the scene.
