Unorthodox: This really should have been a movie. So many scenes in the first three episodes could easily have been left on the cutting room floor and still created the same impression with regards to both Esty’s experience with orthodox judaism and arriving in Berlin. Instead I initially struggled to find interest in either due to the sheer lack of momentum.

I also think much of this was quite poorly directed; the blocking was obvious and frequently clichéd and all bar two of the actors were left to flounder as nothing more than archetypes (although even less than this in the case of the bland friend group). Due to this, it took me about an episode and a half to really be in any capacity impressed by Shira Haas. But after that I found her very good, even frequently exceptional. The scene where she surrenders herself to Yanky in episode 3 and everything to do with that audition in the finale were truly disarming. If I have one criticism of her it’s that she lacked spontaneity. Nothing ever surprised me about Esty or how she reacted to anything. Much of this fault does also fall on the direction again though. The other actor to rise above the rest was Amit Rahav, although I would say this is exclusive to the final episode when the script finally permits him some kind of range. But credit to him, he takes it and matches Haas’s level. I will not dispute either getting Emmy nominations and both feel like performances I would not resist checking off on an unlimited ballot if I were a voter.

I don’t regret watching this by any stretch. Much of it was deeply fascinating and I became truly invested in Esty’s struggle by the finale. But overall I am just very disappointed because it is so plain and clear to me how it could have been so much better.

Finished The Loudest Voice. How is this not going to take up three slots in Supporting Actress? Naomi Watts, Annabelle Wallis and Sienna Miller deserve better.

    I mean the transformation…

I really want to watch Better Call Saul to see what all the hype is all about. I loved Breaking Bad, but for whatever reason I can’t get past the first 2 episodes. Maybe I just can’t get behind the idea of a prequel series. Should I skip ahead to a certain episode… would that help??

You should pretty much know by the pilot if the show gels with you or not, but if you can make it halfway through the season, episode 6 is what I consider to be the season 1 peak. It’s called “Five-O.” Jonathan Banks should have won the Emmy for this episode. It’s a riveting Mike backstory about his son. Gordon Smith was nominated for writing in a drama series for this as well. It was around the time where I thought, okay, this justifies revisiting and expounding on characters I had a firm understanding of from “Breaking Bad.” The stakes inevitably rise for Jimmy/Saul as the series progresses. We were pretty impatient here with the show in the beginning for its “slowness,” but the payoffs have been worth it now that it’s ending. If it doesn’t click after the first couple of episodes, it’s likely not for you. Check it out and report back!

Just started Sharp Objects. It’s a shame that Amy Adams and Michelle Williams had to compete against each other because I loved both performances and they were both excellent. I still think MW deserved her win that year but I’d put Amy a close second from what I’ve seen so far.

Watched up to Crawl Space today in my Breaking Bad binge and my mom had the following stray observations.

    (slight but nondescript spoilers ahead)

Once she saw Gus’ collection of blood bags: “Is Gus just the smartest person in the world?”

In response to seeing Jonathon Banks lying down on that table: “Poor Mike”

She didn’t have any comments for Ted’s head first trip, but she did engage in some understandable hysterical laughter

Her response to Walt getting tased was a combination of laughs and saying “Oh no” followed by: “Walt’s not having a good day is he?”

She said during the episode’s famous ending shot “This isn’t the end of the season is it?”

And finally, upon seeing Gus’ henchman Tyrus pettily making Walt hide in dirty laundry, we had the following exchange:

Mom: I like that guy. I’m not sure why though.

Me: Because he gives Walt crap?

    Mom: Yeah, that’s it.

    Finished Sharp Objects today.

Whilst it started off quite slow in pacing I actually felt quite satisfied by the end as a fan of the book. It caught me completely off guard when they showed (I won’t spoil who did it) the killer’s kills mid credits (I only kept the credits on because of Led Zeppelin hehe).

It’s a shame that it was competing in one of the most competitive years at the Emmys because although I thought Adams, Scanlen, Perkins and Clarkson were fantastic and gave truly breathtaking performances (particularly Adams) I still think Chernobyl and Williams deserved their wins in Series, Actress, Writing and Directing. I haven’t seen The Act yet so I’d probably give Clarkson the Emmy based on all the contenders I have seen from 2019.

I’d have given Adams the Globe and SAG and I’d have awarded the show at DGA (even though this wasn’t as good in terms of direction as Wild or Big Little Lies s1).

    Scanlen was robbed lol.

    Newly Watched :

    Hillary – 7/10
    The Loudest Voice – 7/10
    Ozark season 3 – 9/10
    Sharp Objects – 9/10

    Re-watched :

    Orphan Black season 1 – 10/10

FYC Emmys : Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve"), Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials"), Russell Tovery ("Years and Years"), Helena Bonham Carter ("The Crown") & The Crown, His Dark Materials, Years and Years, Succession and The Affair in all categories. I watched the final three episodes all in one go last night and it was painful. I literally only pushed through because I wanted it off of my watchlist. The finale was odd because it felt like something that if they had made me care about any of the characters or plotlines I’d have really enjoyed. But they hadn’t so I didn’t. Thandie Newton is literally the only saving grace left on this show but that isn’t enough for me anymore so I won’t be returning.

Not sure I quite understand this site’s consensus that Newton didn’t get much to do though. Sure she missed episodes but basically everyone did that due to the nature of how they structured the season but the episodes she did appear in she got a lot of attention I felt. I think it was more the quality of the material for her that was lacking than the quantity but even then that is just kind of reflected in how abysmal the season was. I wouldn’t say she was given much worse than any of the rest of the supporting cast.

The finale was just not great. I was fine with the season until then, but they ended up wasting so much potential. I would be completely fine with nominations for Wood, Newton and even Wright, so I understand what you mean. My problem was that her arc kind of (once again) took a back seat,

That said, it deserves to sweep the tech awards.

Would you really be fine with a Jeffrey Wright nomination? I mean, I don’t have anything against him(as I said before he gave for me one of the best tv performances of the decade in season 1 and 2) but to nominate him for doing absolutely “nothing” is a bit weird, especially in such a stacked year where there are at least 15-17 actors more worthy of a nomination than him. If we go that way I think Ed Harris is much more emmy worthy than Jeffrey Wright.

FYC Emmys: Cillian Murphy(Best Drama Actor)| Unbelievable, Merritt Wever, Toni Collette and Kaytlin Dever| Claire Danes(Best Actress) and Mandy Patinkin(Supporting Actor)| El Camino(TV Movie), Aaron Paul and Jesse Plemons| Sacha Baron Cohen(Limited Series Actor)| Ben Mendelsohn(Drama Actor)| Nicole Kidman(Drama Actress)| Idris Elba(Drama Actor)| Better Call Saul in all categories with a special mention to Tony Dalton(Supporting Actor) and Rhea Seehorn (Supporting Actress).

Moving into Breaking Bad’s fifth season. Season four is still just as excellent as I remember it being.

After rewatching I can say that while it’s very close between them, I’d have given the win to Giancarlo Esposito over Aaron Paul.

Worth noting I’d have given Paul the same record, just replace his season four win with a season two win.

I liked Safe Room more than Hunting actually. I think a lot of people do.

My favorite Succession episode is “Safe Room”. It reminded me of the best episodes of Modern Family, the sitcom nature of that episode was well incorporated to a drama series. “Tern Haven” also continues the sitcom nature, in fact Modern Family has a similar episode with Dunphy children encountering their adult doppelgangers.
