Just finished rewatching Homecoming for the third time. What a special show. The cinematography is unlike anything else. I can’t believe it didn’t sweep technical awards—instead it was shut out. Huh?…

I’m unsure what to watch next. The Undoing is the last show I’ve been really looking forward to and once that’s done I will need to browse. I’m thinking of possibly starting The Boys. Everyone loves it. The Queens Gambit is getting raves. I’m a very fussy viewer but when I love something I LOVE it.

It’s going to be a while before I’m genuinely excited for a release. The Morning Show has resumed filming, thank god. I’m predicting a Big Little Lies announcement for season 3 in December. I’m looking forward to the Julia Roberts/Sean Penn/Armie Hammer show Gaslit that will hopefully begin production in the coming months.

Random thought that serves no real purpose here other than the fact that I would definitely binge whatever project he ends up doing: when will Tom Cruise finally make the jump to television with a limited series?

I’ve been neglecting to talk about The Americans on here for some time, but I’ve been watching. I’m currently on season 5, nearing halfway through.

As for what I’ve seen before, Rhys and Russell continue to be amazing. I don’t know how much more I can say that hasn’t already been said. Whether together or separate, they’re always excellent at all times. I still slightly prefer Rhys’ performance, but unlike with the first two seasons, I think they’re much closer in quality now. Back then he was constantly dominating, but here it’s much more give and take. It’s a shame Russell couldn’t win an Emmy alongside him, though I’m not entirely sure if I would give her one for the previous seasons or not, I’d probably have to think about it. And I don’t know if she’ll be able to dethrone Claire Foy in my mind. But we’ll see.

As for the rest of the cast, there’s still not a weak link. Noah Emmerich is never not bringing his all to this show. He arguably had more consistent great material in the first two seasons, but it’s still a shame that he was never recognized. I understand that his work in the last season is apparently him at his very best, so I’m extremely excited to see what he does there.

I don’t think I’ve ever talked much about Alison Wright on here. She was always a truly great presence, but her work in season 4 was impeccable. She really builds up so much empathy for Martha, and while it makes sense given where the story was going, it’s a shame that her role has been demoted since then, although from what I understand, she’ll have more to do in the future, so I’m looking forward to it.

Then there’s the always exceptional Frank Langella, and I have to say, I really adore his work here. He just gets better and better in my mind. He has such a calm, lovable, yet dangerous manner. Every single scene of his is an absolute treat, and he was really on his A game in the last episode I saw. He’s one of those characters that doesn’t appear in the beginning, but once he’s the there, it becomes so much harder to imagine the show without his involvement. I’m not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I prefer him to Margo Martindale in this, and I love Martindale’s work as well.

But speaking of Martindale, let me get to her Emmy wins. Yes, she’s always great on the show and her performances in seasons 3 and 4 are no exception to that rule. But yeah, that’s are objectively shitty wins. There’s nothing wrong with her performances, but if you’re gonna win with such little screen time, you need to do something more than what she did. In my opinion, she wasn’t even giving the best performances in those scenes, as Langella was making the bigger impact on me. Lois Smith in season 3 and a certain actress who I won’t mention due to spoilers in season 4 would’ve been a thousand times more deserving as the show’s guest actress nominees those years. However, like I said, Margo is still always great on here, and I can’t fault her for getting those votes. I’m happy to see it looks like she’s getting more to do now.

Anyway, moving onto more universally positive thoughts, much like Alison Wright, I don’t think I’ve mentioned Holly Taylor on here. Much like Wright, she’s always been very good, but she’s really showing what she can do lately as they give her more to do. The writers placed a lot of trust in her, giving her one of the most complex roles when she’s only a teen, but she’s never not been up to the challenge. I don’t think I’ve seen her in or heard of her being in anything other than this show, but I hope she gets some promising opportunities in the future, as she’s really a great talent.

And now I’m just gonna group up some of the other players. Annet Mahendru really is wonderful in this role. I always thought she was terrific since season 1, and she truly broke my heart in season 4. Richard Thomas has always been a strong player throughout, and I was really glad to see him getting some juicey material in season 4. Much like Mahendru, he really emotionally resonated with me there. Costa Ronin is another big standout. Never would’ve expected for his role to become so likable as the series goes on. I was convinced he was gonna be a straightforward antagonist in season 2, but he continually surprised me. Much like Langella, it’s hard to imagine the show without him at this point. I really hope I’m not gonna regret saying that about those two, but with this show, who knows? Also the always welcome Dylan Baker made an excellent impression in his intro season. I find his work really interesting here and would like to see more of him, even if his part isn’t all that big.

The writing is still as smart as ever, and the direction has definitely improved as it goes along. The first seasons’ action sequences could be a little confusingly shot and edited I thought. Not to the point where I couldn’t follow, but they really never felt all that clear. Compare that to the later seasons, and it’s clear they’ve found their footing on this front.

Overall, loving the show, and looking forward to the rest.

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

I watched both seasons of The Boys. So entertaining. Antony Starr is a star!

Now watching: The Great. Also entertaining. Incredibly explicit, but fun.

The crown. I know, I’m unforgivably late but I just always assumed that I’d never like it. That said, I’m really enjoying it and 100% understand the hype behind Claire Foy now who somehow makes the queen a sympathetic and likeable person (I said what I said). The cinematography, the writing, the costumes etc are all so thoughtfully crafted. Also, Vanessa Kirby, jarred Harris and John lithgow are all amazing and I can’t wait to eventually see what Olivia Colman and co bring to this great show.

Finally sitting down to watch all of This Is Us (only seen bits at a time up till now) in prep for S5, my otherwise very stoic mom watched a bit with me and was sniffling away 5 minutes into Memphis.

Spent a whole day watching The Queen’s Gambit and almost failed my Latin midterm but it was a worthy cause lol.

Planning to watch the Forsyte Saga miniseries from 2002 with Damien Lewis. I quite like the book, and I have been told that it can fill the Downton Abbey sized hole in my heart.

    FYC:

Best Director - Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), Darius Marder (Sound of Metal)

Lead Actor - Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Mads Mikkelsen (Another Round), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal)

Supporting Actor - Paul Raci (Sound of Metal)

Supporting Actress - Youn Yuh-jung (Minari)

Americans is still great, but I recently started Ted Lasso and it’s really hooking me. The first episode is very good, but there’s a noticeable improvement in the second. It’s the best I’ve ever seen Jason Sudeikis, whose performance is so effortlessly likable, and he gets to show some truly good dramatic talents as well.  The supporting cast is great as well, with the absolute standout being Hannah Waddingham. I can definitely see this being a solid contender, as buzz is growing and we know that Apple pushes hard based on last time.

Also I had recently watched (and in the case of a few rewatched) the prime Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episodes (2-10), which are simply marvelous. The best segment being their The Shining parody. The early years of that show were just so damn good.

I just watched Ted Lasso too. Binged the whole thing, loved it. Fully on the Sudeikis Train now. Waddingham and Temple are so great too. It’s just such an effortlessly likeable show and that ending just leaves me hungry for Season 2. Thrilled that Apple have already renewed the show for 2 more seasons.

    Finished The Great. Huzzah!

The show is very witty and well-scripted. Nicholas Hoult steals the show and Elle Fanning is equally intriguing. The rest of the cast, particularly Gwilym Lee, Belinda Bromilow, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley and Sacha Dhawan, is almost equally as good as the leads. And… uhm why didn’t it dominate at the Emmys!?

Can you see any of those supporting players getting Emmy nods? I’m particularly curious about Godley as I’m a big fan of his stage work. Though I realize of course any of the other men on the show will be at a disadvantage so long as Hoult stays supporting.

I personally would say Sacha Dhawan and Phoebe Fox stand a chance next time round at getting Emmy nods. Specifically Fox.

I also think Fanning might (and should) win next time round.

I don’t know… I don’t see it but everyone i’ve listed is very deserving tbh. Maybe the ladies may have an easier time. Fox is excellent and Bromilow plays one of those characters that you just… like.
