This is a topic that I’m surprised hasn’t been discussed already.

I’m always interested in hearing other people’s opinions of TV shows and who there favorite characters are. So I’ll share mine and you can share yours below.

    Favorite Character
This one is a tie for me. Ironically, both of these characters come from NBC comedies that, starting this January, will air back to back on Thursday night. Ron Swanson on Parks & Recreation and Jenna Maroney on 30 Rock are, in my opinion, two of the best written and best acted comedic characters on TV. These are characters that, without the backing of brilliant writing and BRILLIANT performers (who both should have Emmy’s by now) would become unlikeable goons. However, because they have tried so hard to fine tone these characters, they have remained hilarious and likeable. Mark my words now: Jane Krakowski and Nick Offerman will be Emmy winners by the time their respective shows are over.

    Least Favorite Character
This was an easy one. Once in a while, a character comes along who you just hate, who’s Emmy episode in 2011 makes you cringe, who even after many, many seasons has remained the same and has shown no signs of development or likeability whatsoever, a character who’s performer is, for some God-forsaken reason, an Emmy winner. If you haven’t narrowed it down yet, the character with which I regard is Alan Harper on Two and a Half Men. I really can’t stand this guy. In every episode, there is at least one joke regarding: his cheapness, his inability to maintain a relationship and the fact that he mooches off of everybody in his life. These are really low areas to hit on a person in both real life and fiction. This seems to be a case with every Chuck Lorre (i.e. Raj Koothrapalli, who finishes at #2 on this list, has been unable to talk to women for 5 years on The Big Bang Theory). How Jon Cryer (who I found to be a respectable actor before this show) managed to win an Emmy for this role is beyond me. The worst part is, he submits in supporting every year for a character that has always been lead, and has prevented brilliant actors from getting into this category, especially in 2011. Lastly, he farts in almost every episode, and I find fart/poop jokes to be the least respectable and least entertaining form of comedy.

Since you already gave Ron Swanson some love I think I’m going to choose Abed from Community as my favorite character on television.  He is easily one of the most original characters on television and Community just gets so much better when ever it focuses on him.

As for least favorite character I would have to pick someone from The Walking Dead.  That show has so much potential yet it fails to live up to that potential due to characters like Rick and Lori.  Both of those characters suffer from amateurish writing and very inconsistent acting and all I can do is hope that they leave the screen as quickly as possible.

Constance played by Jessica Lange on American Horror Story.  MTV and TV Guide agree:

Abed is my number 3 but I didn’t want to have more than two as my favorite. That would be a bit odd, no?

I don’t think anybody is really surprised.

Ironically, MTV named Ron Swanson as the best character of the year.

Favorite:  Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad and Ralyan Givens on Justified.

Least favorite:  Cathy on The Big C

Jesse is the heart of the show of Breaking Bad.  Had they killed him off like they planned in season one nobody would care about this show as much.

Raylan is really a tie with Boyd Crowder as well but I had to pick one.  Their chemistry is perfection and their characters are so god damned entertaining.

    Cathy is a twat.

Abed Nadir (Community) would definitely be my number 1, he’s just so … so good. He was the reason to watch Community before Modern Warfare and he still was the best in season 2, with that exceptional Christmas episode. Hasn’t been as much under the spotlight in season 3, but Troy and Annie can do no wrong any way.

Other than that, Hank Schrader on Breaking Bad. This guy represents what’s right and what’s good in a show where people are either profoundly unlikable (Skyler, Marie) or make terrible life decisions leading them into being bad guys (Walter, Jesse). Sure, he might not have been the most pleasant to be around in season 4, but he was going through a lot. Since the early episodes of season 2, and even more clearly since One Minute, he’s been the hero on that show, the one guy you can feel good rooting for.

As for unlikable… there’s a bunch of candidates : Raj Koothrapali (The Big Bang Theory), Marie Schrader (Breaking Bad), Quinn Whatever (Dexter), Nelson Van Alden… but I think the award goes to Gillian Darmody on Boardwalk. Those who watch know what I’m talking about, the others probably don’t want to know. Just… squick.

Interesting that so many people have Abed.  Troy is by far a more likable and engaging character.  Abed is great but his schtick gets tiresome from time to time.

Runner ups: Liz Lemon, Raylan Givens, Ron Swanson, Ben Wyatt, Abed Nadir, Joan Holloway, Walter Bishop and Mary Crawley. I’m still catching up on Breaking Bad but I’m almost sure someone from that show would make my list.

Least favorite is Chirs Traeger. gtfo of my favorite tv show, please. And I’m not a big Jon Snow fan

Favorite characters: Everyone on Parks and Recreation (I just can’t single one out over everyone else), Carrie Mathison (Homeland), Jesse Pinkman (Breaking Bad), Gus Fring (Breaking Bad), Jenna Maroney (30 Rock)
Least favorite characters: Blaine Anderson (Glee), Ben Harmon (American Horror Story), everyone on Community (they’ve all turned into one big clique of smugness this season.  I would hate to see them and the cast of Happy Endings in a smug-off).
