    DISCUSS YOUR THOUGHTS BELOW.

When the Emmy nominations were announced and Watchmen led the way and Succession and Ozark got 18 nomination in Drama Series I started to wonder how well Watchmen would have done had it stayed in Drama and what would have replaced its slots in the Limited categories.

Here’s my thoughts on the Drama side what would have happened (bold for who Watchmen would have gotten in and strikes for who would have been knocked out)

For this one I am assuming Watchmen would have submitted in the exact same way on the Limited Series as it would have on the Drama side and that HBO wouldn’t have a contender nominated in Limited Serieslike in 2018 :

    Drama Series

    – Better Call Saul
    – The Crown
    – The Handmaid’s Tale
    – Killing Eve
    – The Mandalorian
    – Ozark
    – Stranger Things
    – Succession
    – Watchmen

    Drama Actress

    – Jennifer Aniston
    – Olivia Colman
    – Jodie Comer
    – Regina King
    – Laura Linney
    – Sandra Oh (whilst her overdue narrative and the recent race scandals on Killing Eve may help this actress finally win an Emmy I think she could have easily missed for King like Davis missed this year)
    – Zendaya

    Drama Actor

    – Jason Bateman
    – Steve Carell
    – Brian Cox
    – Jermey Irons
    – Sterling K. Brown
    – Billy Porter
    – Jeremy Strong

    Drama S. Actress

    – Helena Bonham Carter
    – Laura Dern
    – Julia Garner
    – Thandie Newton
    – Fiona Shaw
    – Jean Smart
    – Sarah Snook
    – Meryl Streep
    – Samira Wiley

    Drama S. Actor

    – Yayha Abdul-Mateen II
    – Tim Blake Nelson

    – Nicholas Braun
    – Billy Crudup
    – Kieran Culkin
    – Mark Duplass
    – Giancarlo Esposito
    – Louis Gossett Jr.
    – Matthew Macfadyen
    – Bradley Whitford
    – Jeffrey Wright

    Drama Writing

    – Aberfan (The Crown)
    – All In (Ozark)
    – Bad Choice Road (Better Call Saul)
    – Bagman (Better Call Saul)
    – Boss Fight (Ozark)
    – Fire Pink (Ozark)
    – This Extraordinary Being (Watchmen)
    – This is Not For Tears (Succession)

I love Boss Fight but I think its pretty clear that had Watchmen competed here it and not two acclaimed episodes of writers branch darling Better Call Saul, the winner this year Succession and perennial nominee Peter Morgan would not get snubbed. I mean I’d argue that Boss Fight should have (this is my personal view) been swapped out for Mindhunter.

    Drama Directing

    – Aberfan (The Crown)
    – Cri de Coeur (The Crown)
    – Hunting (Succession)
    – Fire Pink (Ozark)
    – It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice (Watchmen)
    – The Interview (The Morning Show)
    – Prisoners of War (Homeland)
    – Su Casa Es Mi Casa (Ozark)
    – This Extraordinary Being (Watchmen)
    – This is Not For Tears (Succession)

    Drama G. Actor

    – Jovan Adepo (Watchmen)
    – Jason Bateman (The Outsider)
    – James Cromwell (Succession)
    – Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian)
    – Ron Cephas Jones (This is Us)
    – Andrew Scott (Black Mirror)
    – Martin Short (The Morning Show)

    Drama G. Actress

    – Alexis Bledel
    – Hong Chau
    – Laverne Cox
    – Cherry Jones
    – Phylicia Rashad
    – Cicely Tyson
    – Harriet Walter

I think either Walter or Cox would have missed. My best guess would be Walter but idk. Maybe Chau would have missed herself?

    Drama Casting

    – Big Little Lies
    – The Crown
    – The Handmaid’s Tale
    – Killing Eve
    – Ozark
    – Succession
    – Watchmen

I’ve taken out The Handmaid’s Tale and not Big Little Lies because as we saw with Stranger Things winning or When They See Us winning shows how Series that failed to do well in winning directing can do well in Casting with younger ensembles (I’m talking about the casting of the children on this show).

    Cinematography (Hour)

I think Westworld and Tales From the Loop would have missed for the two Watchmen episodes.

    Music Composition

I think The Crown or Ozark would have missed. Considering how The Crown managed to get a prior nomination here whilst Ozark didn’t (which I am actually surprised by) I’m inclined to say the latter would have missed but who knows?

    Editing

Probably two of The Mandalorian episodes and Stranger Things would have missed although considering how The Crown missed here I wouldn’t be surprised if either Succession or Ozark would have missed for the three Watchmen eps.

    Sound Editing

    – Better Call Saul
    – The Boys
    – The Crown
    – Star Trek : Picard
    – Stranger Things
    – Watchmen
    – Westworld

I think Saul is filler everywhere apart from Writing and Sound.

    Sound Mixing

    – Better Call Saul
    – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
    – Ozark
    – Star Trek : Picard
    – Stranger Things
    – Watchmen
    – Westworld

Comment below with how you think Watchmen would have fared in the Drama categories and what you think would have taken its Limited Series slots?

FYC OSCARS : VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", GLENN CLOSE FOR "HILLBILLY ELEGY", ANTHONY HOPKINS FOR "THE FATHER", CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOR "MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM", PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY).

Ah, the topic I was wondering if anyone was going to post for the last month and I was preparing to post after the awards.

Personally, I don’t think Watchmen would have done nearly as well if it went drama as if it went limited. I don’t think that any of the male actors would have got in and maybe King and Smart could have made it, along with writing and directing for This Extraordinary Being, plus plenty of tech nods, but I don’t think it would received anywhere near 26 Emmy nods.

Regarding what would have gotten into Watchmen’s longform spots if it had gone drama, I feel like Hollywood, based on its 4 acting nominations, would have received several more and likely would have received a program nod as well. Little Fires Everywhere also probably would have gotten Witherspoon in for acting and a writing nod, with Mrs. America and Unbelievable getting directing nods.

I think this is what would have happened on the Limited side if Watchmen  competed in Drama.

LIMITED SERIES Normal People as the fifth nominee
LIMITED ACTRESS Daisy Edgar-Jones as the fifth nominee
LIMITED ACTOR = Russell Crowe (or David Corenswet 🙁 as the fifth nominee)
LIMITED S. ACTRESS = Rose Byrne or Patti LuPone

    LIMITED S. ACTOR

    – Yayha Abdul-Mateen II
    – Jovan Adepo
    – Tituss Burgess
    – Louis-Gossett Jr.
    – Joe Mantello
    – Dylan McDermott
    – Jim Parsons
    – Amit Rahav
    – John Slattery

    LIMITED DIRECTING

    – El Camino
    – Little Fires Everywhere (Find a Way)
    – Mrs. America (Shirley)
    – Normal People (Episode 5)
    – The Plot Against America (Part 6)
    – Unorthodox
    – Watchmen (It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice)
    – Watchmen (Little Fear of Lightning)
    – Watchmen (This Extraordinary Being)

LIMITED WRITING = Mrs. America (Betty) (5th place)
    LIMITED/MOVIE CASTING = Hollywood (5th place)

    Cinematography

    – Defending Jacob
    – Devs
    – Normal People (Episode 5)
    – The Plot Against America
    – Unorthodox (Part 2)
    – Watchmen (Little Fear of Lightning)
    – Watchmen (This Extraordinary Being)

    Editing

    – Devs (Episode 7)
    – El Camino
    – Mrs. America (Phyllis)
    – Normal People (Episode 5)
    – Unorthodox (Part 1)
    – Watchmen (A God Walks Into Abar)
    – Watchmen (It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice)
    – Watchmen (This Extraordinary Being)

Sound Editing = Hollywood (5th nominee)
Sound Mixing = Mrs. America (5th nominee)

How I think the nominations would have gone :

    15 – Hollywood, Mrs. America
    11 – Unorthodox
    8 – Normal People
    5 – Devs, El Camino
2 – The Plot Against America

Conclusion: I think Unorthodox probably would have won Series and Directing (even if it lost Actress and Writing) but the odds would have favoured Mrs. America due to the number of nominations it would have gotten (which I think would have been a bit more than what it has now). Normal People would have also have done very well and Jim Parsons would probably lose S. Actor easily because of a three way vote-split.

It would definitely be winning Series, Actress and Directing (maybe even writing).

Stranger Things and either Zendaya or Oh wouldn’t have been nominated.

Irons might’ve gotten in over Carell.
Yahya Abdul Mateen II and Louis Gossett Jr. would’ve taken the spots of Duplass and Braun.

Jean Smart would’ve gotten in over Dern.

Hmm I think Smart would have gotten in over Wiley, Blake Nelson would have gotten in and the line-up would just be WatchmenSuccession and The Morning Show and that The Handmaid’s Tale would have been the show that missed Series.

Yeah it would be interesting had it been in Drama because Drama Actress would be so easy to predict but Limited/Movie Actress would probably be even harder.

On the supporting races, I don’t think any of the PoC actors would be losing their spots, let alone all of them. Smart would probably get in over Shaw, Mateen and maybe Gossett Jr. over Withford and/or Duplass and, sadly, I don’t see Nelson getting nominated, since he couldn’t do it in a weaker field over in limited.

Also don’t know about Sandra Oh, people love her and Killing Eve turned out to still be strong, even though the season was weak. King would definately get in, but it’s though to determine who would leave.

Would win directing, be as strong in actress and supporting actress. Also think Mateen would have a good chance to capitalize on the Sucession votesplit and be favourite if he was the only Watchmen supporting actor getting in. But it wouldn’t be a lock on series, being in a 50% x 50% batlle with Succession (we probably wouldn’t be considering Ozark), and lose writing.
