I like the fact that more than 5 get in, at least in drama, there are so many shows out there, and even with 8 (!), strong shows were left out this year, like Pose, Big Little Lies, Mr Robot and so on.

    Comedy had 8 and Ramy and The great were also snubbed, damn this hit hard.

    This new rule of submissions is the best scenario for me.

    But I will say this on drama this year (the rest is too much for my old head to remember)

    I think Killing Eve would be shut out, alongside Handmaid’s Tale and Stranger Things, leaving the field with

    Succession, Better Call Saul, Ozark, The Mandalorian and The Crown

    FYC:

    "Succession" and "Severance" in all Drama categories;
    "Ted Lasso" and "The Great" in all Comedy categories;
    "Station Eleven" and "The White Lotus" in all Limited categories + Ethan Hawke for "Moon Knight".

    Oh I think Better Call Saul would have easily missed Series this year with 5 nominees and same with The Handmaid’s Tale. I’d say Killing Eve was simply ahead of both due to the fact it managed to get its two Leads in whilst Better Call Saul couldn’t get its Lead and its principal female actor in and The Handmaid’s Tale missed for its Emmy winning and three time SAG nominated lead and its two principal supporting ladies.

    FYC:

    "The Good Fight", "The Other Two" and "Station Eleven" in all categories, Sarah Lancashire ("Julia"), William Jackson Harper ("Love Life") and Luke Kirby ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel")

    Killing Eve was obviously ahead of BCS, it was a total non factor this year.

    2021:

    Comedy Series: Pen15

    I’d switch Pen15 for Black-ish. Just in an empty year,I feel old favourites would return.

    Not Pose?

    Pose would still get in huns

    Pose couldn’t get back into casting (an award it was nominated for in season 1) whilst all five of BridgertonThe Crown, The Handmaid’s TaleLovecraft Country and The Mandalorian were nominated there.

    FYC:

    "The Good Fight", "The Other Two" and "Station Eleven" in all categories, Sarah Lancashire ("Julia"), William Jackson Harper ("Love Life") and Luke Kirby ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel")

    I just think the last season narrative plus the fact that it’s already won 3 emmys this year AND it got nominated for actress, writing and directing means something.

    The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Mandalorian, Bridgerton, Pose

    While I do agree Lovecraft country over-performed, Pose also did quite well and their narrative would be much stronger against Lovecraft Country in a field of 5.

    Ted Lasso, Hacks, The Flight Attendant, The Kominsky Method, black-ish

    PEN15 made it (I’m so glad it did), but it was the same, only a writing nod just like it did for the first season, i think voters would default to an old favorite on that lineup over PEN15 who is quite small still.

    FYC:

    "Succession" and "Severance" in all Drama categories;
    "Ted Lasso" and "The Great" in all Comedy categories;
    "Station Eleven" and "The White Lotus" in all Limited categories + Ethan Hawke for "Moon Knight".

    Both Pose and Lovecraft Country would in over Bridgerton, that was clearly an after thought above the line minus breakout star RJP.

    IMO the key here is to look at the branch support each of these shows have. Sure some shows may over-perform with some branches and under-perform with others but at the end of the day the broader the amount of support you have, the stronger your chances are at a series nomination.

    What We Do in the Shadows got shut out in acting and directing last year yet we can all agree it would have easily made a field of 5. Same with Insecure in spite of its writing and directing omissions. The Morning Show had tonnes of acting nominations last year and directing and production design nomination yet it missed casting and then failed to get nominated in a series field of 8 even as shows like Stranger Things got in.

    Each drama series nominee by branch support this year:

    The Crown (11) – Acting, casting, costumes, directing, editing, makeup/hairstyling, music, music supervision, production design, sound mixing, writing

    The Mandalorian (11) – Acting, casting, costumes, directing, editing, makeup/hairstyling, music, production design, sound editing, sound mixing, writing

    The Handmaid’s Tale (10) – Acting, casting, costumes, directing, editing, makeup/hairstyling, music, production design, sound mixing, writing

    Lovecraft Country (9) – Acting, casting, costumes, makeup/hair, music, music supervision, sound editing, sound mixing, writing

    Bridgerton (8) – Acting, casting, costumes, directing, makeup/hairstyling, music, music supervision, production design

    Pose (5) – Acting, directing, costumes, makeup/hairstyling, writing

    The Boys (3) – Music, sound mixing, writing

    This is Us (3) – Acting, makeup, music

    FYC:

    "The Good Fight", "The Other Two" and "Station Eleven" in all categories, Sarah Lancashire ("Julia"), William Jackson Harper ("Love Life") and Luke Kirby ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel")
