Piper Laurie as lead in twin peaks. Lara Flynn Boyle was more lead than piper

To be clear, this is not criticising, those are genuine interrogations 🙂
Why the cast of Friends was submitted as supporting during the first seasons and then lead after that? Even if that’s not really a problem because I don’t think a difference was ever made between the six main actors and that’s the most important.
I think I remember Sheen and Lowe being submitted as lead in The West Wing, I don’t think they were more important than Janney, Spencer, Whitford or Schiff, I believe Sheen was even originally supposed to only be a guest star.
Same goes about Lost, I get why Fox would be submitted as a lead but why not as well Holloway, O’Quinn and Emerson at least? (or even Garcia, Lilly)
In Brothers & Sisters, the cast was led by Field but Flockhart, Griffiths or Rhys were really important parts of the family drama.
Last but not least, in GOT I think Dinklage could easily have been a lead on many seasons, Headey as well after S4…
Any thoughts?

All 6 of them should have gunned for Lead from the beginning, like the Desperate Housewives ladies did

Best Actress - Viola Davis, Frances McDormand

Best Supporting Actor - Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman
Best Picture - Nomadland
Best Director - Chloé Zhao

Best Cinematography - NomadlandJune 29, 2020 at 4:31 pm #1203557981It didn’t bother me and made strategic sense, but Shailene Woodley was an undeniable lead in Big Little Lies’ first season. Witherspoon was the main character in terms of screen time and involvement in all the storylines, but Woodley was the protagonist whose eyes we saw the series through. Reese and Shailene should have went lead, Kidman and Dern should have went supporting. However, the latter two had more narrative to win their deserved accolades, so it made sense to split them apart. The 2017/18 Limited Actress race was one of the best lineups in awards show history. As great (and justified) as Kidman’s sweep was; she, Witherspoon, Lange and Sarandon (I’ll include Huffman here too as she’s always phenomenal but I never saw the third season of American Crime) ALL gave career best performances.
Although she didn’t receive a nomination that year, Teri Hatcher submitted supporting for season 8 of Desperate Housewives- a series that always submitted as comedy despite being a drama.
Idris Elba and Helen Mirren always being nominated in Limited for Luther and Prime Suspect, despite them being ongoing series.
Woodley Harrelson going Lead for Game Change to stop him competing against Ed Harris.

As far as I know, both Luther and Prime Suspect were ineligible for drama series, which is ridiculous. Sherlock, The Hour and the last seasons of The Big C and Treme were also ineligible.
I think the biggest fraud for limited series/series was Downton Abbey. The second season started production in March 2011, nearly four months before the nominations announcement.

Where she appeared in 22/22 episodes and her character was literally introduced in an episode called “The New Rachel”, where she was literally picked to replace Rachel Berry as the lead.

That was fraudulent, but where the rules required it at the time, as PBS aired the show in four blocks, so it did not have the six episodes required to qualify as a drama.

Oh, I didn’t know. Thanks, Riley.

I agree with Rachel Griffiths, the only lead lady in the show is Frances Conroy. I hope that it’s not why Frances lost back then cause it would be a shame. Michael C. Hall, otherwise, shares co lead with Peter Krause the entire series, imo.

Rose Byrne as supporting for Damages was a little ridiculous.
