New rule changes at the Emmys dictate that TV shows must be 30 minutes or less to compete in the comedy category, otherwise it is considered a drama, although there are opportunities for exceptions to be made.
Despite previously being nominated in comedy categories, this puts “Orange Is the New Black” in the position that it may end up switching over to the drama side.
Despite 60 minute runtimes, “Glee,” “Jane the Virgin,” and “Shameless” have recently been approved to compete in the comedy categories.
Which category do you think OITNB will end up in?March 17, 2015 at 6:41 pm #343643
It’ll end up in drama because I think this rule is just a big cover up to just move Orange. I honestly don’t agree with A. the rule or B. the move. No running time of a show depicts a genre.March 17, 2015 at 6:42 pm #343644
Drama. Were it belongs.March 17, 2015 at 6:58 pm #343645
Leaning way more towards Drama after today’s announcement but it would be hilarious if it was actually allowed in Comedy since it would pretty much make this big rule change completely irrelevant.March 17, 2015 at 11:51 pm #343646

Drama. End of storyMarch 18, 2015 at 12:41 am #343648
And Uzo will be in supporting actress in a drama? The new rules seem to make her in eligible for guest actress.March 18, 2015 at 2:09 am #343649
First of all it belong in Drama, so I’m hopeful that’s where it’ll end up.
More importantly, the fact that OITNB wasn’t in te batch of shows that just switched suggests to me that it won’t. If they wanted tomake the switch, they would have made the appeal immediately, and obviously they failed. Thre’s always the possibility that they are still on the fence, but I doubt it.March 18, 2015 at 3:20 am #343650
Do we officially know why they haven’t made an announcement on OITNB? Is it because their team has not officially made an appeal yet or is it because the Emmy jury is still deciding? If it is a matter of them still deciding then I am very worried they will be pushed into the drama race. If it is just a matter of them not submitting an official appeal yet then they will probably be in comedy like Shameless.March 18, 2015 at 4:47 am #343651
I still think the length of a show should not determine whether it is a drama or comedy. Let the producers submit where they want to and let the voters decide. If Orange is not comedic enough it won’t win comedy series. An actress like Aduba could win in either a drama or a comedy catagory because the performance is so good.March 18, 2015 at 6:17 am #343652
After competing and succeeding in comedy last year and with Shameless being allowed to compete in that category, I doubt the show suddenly moves to drama. It would make no sense and it would contradict the Shameless ruling big time.
The whole thing is one big contradiction. They come out and say comedies are only those 30 minute shows and then they place 3 hour longs in that category weeks later. Why would Orange be treated differently than Shameless?March 18, 2015 at 6:44 am #343653
I wanna say that if “Shameless” can be considered a comedy, so can “OITNB.” However, it seems like that “Shameless” decision is only based on this season, which has been much more lighter than the very dramatic fourth season of “Shameless” last year when the show made the transition to the comedy categories. This season is much lighter. If the panel has to watch the second season of “OITNB” to decide comedy/drama, the first episode is extremely dramatic and does it no favors for a comedy move. However, the following episodes are a lot lighter in tone. I am fine with “OITNB” as a comedy. I see the arguments for it as a “drama.” Regardless, I’d like to see the show rewarded in some capacity this year because it deserves it over a number of perennial nominees in either genre.March 18, 2015 at 9:06 am #343654
I think it’s going to be scapegoated in Drama. If “Orange” is drama, then so is “Shameless.” It should stay in Comedy based on the precedents they’ve already set.March 18, 2015 at 9:40 am #343655
I think Orange will remain in the laffer field. Especially because it was treated so generously in that field with nominations last year.March 18, 2015 at 10:30 am #343656
I don’t watch Shameless, so I can’t comment on the similarities between that and Orange, but there is no question in my mind that Orange is a drama with some comedic moments, and really doesn’t belong in the Comedy Series categories.
