Almost every year there is one performer from a limited series or television movie that is eligible for the upcoming Emmy cycle who is nominated at SAG but is snubbed at the Emmys due to them starting off low in the race and then being overtaken in a competitive field.
2019: Russell Crowe
2018: Anthony Hopkins, Bill Pullman, Emma Stone
2017: The only person eligible who was nominated at SAG that year was Jeff Daniels and he made it to the Emmys and won
2016: Bryce Dallas Howard
2015: Ben Kingsley, Bill MurrayThe following are nominated at SAG this year and are eligible for this Emmy cycle:
– Bill Camp, The Queen’s Gambit
– Michaela Coel, I May Destroy You
– Daveed Diggs, Hamilton
– Hugh Grant, The Undoing
– Ethan Hawke, The Good Lord Bird
– Nicole Kidman, The Undoing
– Anya Taylor-Joy, The Queen’s GambitI personally consider Coel and Taylor-Joy to be Emmy locks because both their shows are the series frontrunners but I think at least one of the other names I’ve listed will miss the Emmy nomination.
What do you guys think? Do you think there will be another SAG nominee –> Emmy snub this year and if so who do you think it will be?

Diggs seemed like the most ready miss of the bunch, otherwise.

Diggs is interesting because I personally do not buy Hamilton performing as well as it’s projected to in the predictions centre. But I do think his SAG nom indicates he’d be first to get nominated.
I do think Kidman will miss. Her and Grant remind me a bit of Kaitlyn Dever/Merritt Wever last year. I do think Grant is likely to get nominated though but she feels like she’s on the bubble of missing.

March 21, 2021 at 4:21 am #1204148112Camp, Diggs and Kidman. The others are the faces of series front runners (ATJ, Coel) or were the most acclaimed part of their show (Grant, Hawke)

All the others are safe-ish

This! I know Diggs got a SAG nomination and Manuel-Miranda got a Globe nomination but where is the confidence in Hamilton getting 5 acting nominations coming from? The field isn’t that weak and so far they’ve either gotten one or none at each awards ceremony in nominations.
Of course they could still get nominated but I don’t see 5 happening.

March 21, 2021 at 11:10 am #1204148807I am sure that they will threat Hamilton in only two possible ways:
1. Like the Tony’s, nominating the entire cast.
2. Like the Critics Choice awards, they will nominate only the movie itself and reward it as “TV movie of the year”.And I feel that it will be option 2. The Emmys are too serious to treat a filmed play as a real movie, especially when the competition is so big.

There is a big difference, Jesus Christ Superstar was produced and filmed especially for TV as a TV event, Hamilton is just the original Broadway production filmed from different angles in 2016!!!
ReplyCopy URLMarch 22, 2021 at 6:33 am #1204150453Jesus Christ Superstar was also in a very weak field where The Assassination of Gianni Versace was more or less the de facto frontrunner regardless of it not being as big or acclaimed as OJ Simpson.

Emma Thompson and Audra McDonald were also nominated for PBS aired live recordings, which is essentially the same as Hamilton.

Then it managed to win that AFI special award over the likes of Schitt’s creek and IMDY. Apart from TQG, it has done the best in the limited categories. That’s without mentioning the kind of cultural phenomenon it has been. I doubt it gets zero acting nominations.

The mentality behind nominating Hamilton is to have it among your recognized ones, a program nomination might serve that purpose.
