If anyone is pulling a Merritt Wever this year? Who will be that shocking winner that literally no one is expecting?July 26, 2014 at 6:59 am #325638
Frances Conroy and I would love every minute of it!!!July 26, 2014 at 7:21 am #325639
I would love to see Kristen Wiig pull it out in the Miniseries category.July 26, 2014 at 7:30 am #325640
I would love to see Kristen Wiig pull it out in the Miniseries category.
You know I was actually considering that. I think it was mentioned in the slugfest but voters can get through The Spoils of Babylon pretty quickly (and I’m sure most of them haven’t seen it) and she’s great in it. It’s such a different performance, really, from anything that’s ever been in that category and I could see voters latching onto it as a “discovery” of some sort and voting for her. She’s parodying the miniseries of yesteryear so older voters would probably have a greater appreciation for the performance. Just a thought.July 26, 2014 at 7:31 am #325641
People should not be so dismissive of Lizzy Caplan’s chances.July 26, 2014 at 7:48 am #325642
People shouldn’t under estamate Jeff Daniels again.July 26, 2014 at 8:47 am #325643
My Merrit Wever upset predictions:
– Kristen Wiig, Miniseries/Movie Actress: this would be perfection, and yes she’s the apple in a bag of oranges, meaning she could prevail. Also, she’s overdue, and is really enjoying a really strong movie career at the moment (I’m surprised this didn’t propel her to a win in 2011 with the success of Bridesmaids, but anyhow).
– Anna Chlumsky, Supporting Comedy Actress. If Janney or Mulgrew can’t do it for whatever reason, Chlumsky is the wild card here.
– Adam Driver, Supporting Comedy Actor. I don’t think Ferguson or Burrell are winning; and if Tony Hale doesn’t prevail again, I see Adam Driver winning in a Wever kind of way, and then being dropped next year.July 26, 2014 at 8:48 am #325644
Potential Merrit Wever’s
Supporting Actress Comedy- Anna Chulmsky, Veep
She might not have the over the top tape that a Janney or Mulgrew have but what she does she does well…sorta like how Wever won last year.
Supporting Actor Drama- Jim Carter, Downton Abbey
He actually has his best tape ever and is very likeable.
Supporting Actress Drama- Christine Baranski, Good Wife and Lena Headey, Game of Thrones
These shows have rabid fan bases and if their fans are on this panel they know these ladies had strong seasons and may drive them to a surprise win over a stronger tape in Gunn, I still think there were some Nurse Jackie fans on that SUpporting Actress Comedy panel.
Lead Actress Drama- Lizzy Caplan, Masters of Sex
Anyone suffering from Danes fatigue and don’t want to return to Marguiles, will have Caplan to turn to now that Wright botched her submission.
Lead Actress TV Movie- Minnie Driver, Return to Zero and Kristin Wiig, The Spoils of Babylon
For the first time, I am actually sitting down to watch the TV Movie nominees as these categories always screw me over. And if voters actually watch I think they will see what I have seen. That Tyson gave a very standard imitation of Page’s legendary performance and Lange has done the crazy diva thing before. Driver was very very moving and Wiig was just totally different and funny.
Supporting Actress TV Movie- Frances Conroy, American Horror Story Coven
Everyone is saying Roberts, Tolman, and Bates. I suffered through 9 episodes of Coven before I couldn’t take anymore but Conroy was on fire. She should win for the wig alone.
TV Actress Comedy- Melissa McCarthy, Mike and Molly
She really does have arguably the best tape in the category. None of the critics will see it coming.
I would have included Adam Driver to because he seems really respected but his tape is just not good enough for me to see him doing it.July 26, 2014 at 8:55 am #325645
Last year truly taught me not to underestimate anyone in any category. If someone is nominated at the Emmys, it means they have a chance. Frontrunner status is a no go at the Emmys for some reason, and this unpredictability is why it’s my favorite of all awards shows… Last year’s surprise element was INSANE, and I hope for some more of the same this year.July 26, 2014 at 9:11 am #325646
If we’re talking about big surprise winners then don’t forget to mention the possibility of Mayim Bialik her character on “The Big Bang Theory” she didn’t get much range to show in the “Indecesion amalgamation” episode but it is funny stuff. If Jon Voight won best supporting actor that would be the biggest shocker of the night.July 26, 2014 at 9:55 am #325647
FYC: Ready Player One. Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, Original Score, Production Design, Director and BEST PICTURE (make it happen Oscars!!)July 26, 2014 at 10:06 am #325648
Kate McKinnonJuly 26, 2014 at 10:12 am #325649
How would Voight be a shocker since he won the Globe?July 26, 2014 at 10:14 am #325650
I would love it to be Matt LeBlanc for Best Comedy Actor
I can also imagine Adam Driver winning
Give Paul Thomas Anderson an Oscar.July 26, 2014 at 10:19 am #325651
Because the Globes mean nothing to the Emmys. If it were so, Chris Colfer, Matt LeBlanc, Katy Segal, Don Cheadle, and Lena Dunham would have Emmys not to mention Andy Samberg and Jaquilenne Bissett would have been nominated this year. If “they won a Golden Globe” is your arguement, why isn’t Amy Poehler talked about?
