I have just started watching When They See Us (which I find to be incredibly well written, acted, directed and emotional) and one thing I couldn’t stop thinking about was the fact that Felicity Huffman was not submitted by Netflix becuase of the whole college cheating scandal. Had the scandal not happened :

    1) Would she have been nominated (I think she would)?
    2) Who would she have bumped?

FYC Emmys : Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve"), Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials"), Russell Tovery ("Years and Years"), Helena Bonham Carter ("The Crown") & The Crown, His Dark Materials, Years and Years, Succession and The Affair in all categories. The Politician : Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bette Midler and Judith Light.

At first I thought Margaret Qualley but now I’m thinking she would have bumped Clarkson. Fosse/Verdon could very well have been second in the Limited Series race last year and generally had a much broader support than Sharp Objects from the acting branch of the Television Academy (its two wins at SAG compared to Sharp Objects’s 0 show that). Qualley also had buzz going for her being in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and all. We’ve seen how this has benefited Emmy contenders in the past (Melissa McCarthy, Vanessa Kirby, Katherine Heigl, Claire Foy, Regina King and so on).

I think she would’ve been nominated and bumped Margaret Qualley.

Whoever said she would have bumped Farmiga is wrong. If they were voting for Huffman they would have voted for Farmiga. The same can be applied to Blake arguably.

I feel pretty strongly it would’ve been Qualley, who has one really great scene in the show but otherwise doesn’t do a whole lot. If not her than Blake, just because she’s a smaller name than Huffman.

    It wouldn’t have been Clarkson.

It is a colloquial term used in this situation to describe displacement.

I think in terms of the nomination the race was probably like this :

    1. Patricia Arquette
    2. Emily Watson
    3. Vera Farmiga
    4. Margaret Qualley
    5. Patricia Clarkson/Marsha Stephanie Blake

In terms of the win it probably was like this :

    1. Patricia Arquette
    2. Patricia Clarkson
    3. Emily Watson
    4. Margaret Qualley
    5. Vera Farmiga
    6. Marsha Stephanie Blake

With Huffman included I feel the nominations race would have gone like this :

    1. Patricia Arquette
    2. Emily Watson
    3. Felicity Huffman
    4. Vera Farmiga
    5. Margaret Qualley
    6. Marsha Stephanie Blake
    7. Patricia Clarkson

    And the win :

    1. Patricia Arquette
    2. Emily Watson
    3. Margaret Qualley
    4. Vera Farmiga
    5. Felicity Huffman
    6. Marsha Stephanie Blake

Had Norbert Leo Butz been nominated, I would’ve said Patricia Clarkson. I know “Sharp Objects” was an underdog last year, but knowing Leo Butz snub, I would say Margaret Qualley.

Not saying you’re wrong but the same argument could be made for Clarkson with Scanlen being snubbed. Especially considering Scanlen had way more to do than Butz did in Fosse/Verdon.

    Clarkson.

She never directly faced any of the 2019 Emmy nominees during the 2018-2019 winter awards season so that distorts the amount of support she had in this particularly group of 6.

WTSU has the support of the actors so MSB & Farmiga are safe. Qualley was in the breakout year, a legacy and in the likely series runner up. Arquette always had the win on lock & Watson was in the Series winner.

Add Sharp Objects lack of overall Emmy love and the fact it just barely made series by the hair then Clarkson bumped is the most realistic scenario.

Blake. It was definitely not Clarkson.

Television academy has a bias against young performers, specifically those who hadn’t had a great role before. Leo Butz is a two time Tony Award winner, which surprised me for his snub specially after Qualley nomination.

I think the nominations rank was: 1) Watson; 2) Arquette; 3) Farmiga; 4) Blake; 5) Clarkson; 6) Qualley

There might have been 7 nominees with the addition of Felicity Huffman

Niece Nash should have been submitted to Supporting Actress and episode 4 would have won her the Emmy.

I was very fascinated by Huffman’s turn (she is truly magnificent), and I believe that she would have had a chance to win. I also think that unlike some of her co-stars, Felicity would have been easily nominated on both the Golden Globe and the SAG.

On the one hand, it was a bit unfair that she had not been submitted at all – I think they made a very biased, unprofessional decision. Anything Felicity has done in her private life is not part of judging a pre-existing performance. Yes, she probably wouldn’t have been nominated, but judging art can’t be 100% person-based.

And she didn’t exactly become a serial killer or rapist…not to mention that if people followed the trial, they could see how many of her colleagues supported her and what stories they were told about her.

It’s not always simplistic, people. A human soul can be complex, and good, decent individuals can make decisions that are terrible. I hope Felicity finds her way back into the business because I think she’s really one of the most talented actresses (Sports Night, Desperate Housewives, American Crime, When They See Us) in the game.
