China Anne McClain had her own Disney Channel show A.N.T. Farm, had her own Disney Channel movie, and also starred as Uma in Descendants 2 and 3. She acts fine, is a great singer and fine dancer. Her peers Zendaya, Dove Cameron, Bella Thorne, and Sofia Carson are much more known and have done and continue to get great projects whereas China doesn’t seem to be getting the same opportunities. She also has never reached the same height of popularity as those that came before her like Selena, Hilary, and Miley, and also those that came after her like Sabrina Carpenter and Rowan.
What do you think happened or why do you think this is?April 2, 2020 at 2:52 pm #1203407042
China is very successful on Descendants and Black Lightning as of now. Out of the young women from her generation and after, Zendaya is the most popular one. If China is viewed as unsuccessful, it’s because of how society and media views dark skin women. Normani is having trouble being successful being a Black woman in pop music who isn’t Beyonce and Rihanna. Even one of the girls from Little Mix who is Black was told that she had to work 10x harder than her fellow group members due to the color of her skin. In Fifth Harmony, Normani was the one with the less followers from the group on Twitter last time I checked. It is what it is. Light skin Black girls are the ones people look at like Doja Cat or Zendaya. China is 21 years old as of now and has time to be as successful as she wants and deserves. Blanchard’s career is downhill for reasons you can see on Instagram. Carpenter isn’t big either. She is on Hollywood Records who really don’t have a good track record with their biggest artists who have left the label. She’s planning on leaving though.April 19, 2020 at 8:14 pm #1203436186
I think its becoming more rare for any Disney channel act to break out, or at least to the level of Selena Gomez/Miley Cyrus. The ones you named, aside from Zendaya, are hardly household names or getting any good significant work. Dove Cameron hasn’t been on the Billboard Charts since Disney, and the only thing ive seen her in was a supporting role in Agents of SHIELD. Bella works a lot but not in projects that garner her praise, she is in nothing significant. I don’t know who Sofia Carson is. I think if China has that descendants franchise, as well as as a semi-successful leading role on a CW show, she’s doing okay.
also colorism could definitely be a factor, but that is unfortunately obvious and I’d rather try to offer a different perspective.

Zendaya is the only 2010s Disney Channel alum to fully cross over to the general public in the same way that Miley/Demi/JonasX3/Selena/Raven/Hilary/Zac/Vanessa did in the 2000s & earlier this decade. Dove, Sofia & Rowan aren’t anywhere near the level of Zendaya in the public consciousness.
The only recent ones who are even on their level are Ross Lynch & Bella Thorne (I’d argue Bella is more known is a personality/tabloid star than an actress/singer at this point). I guess you could count Hayley Kiyoko & Naomi Scott as recent DC breakouts but despite starring in Lemonade Mouth, it never felt like they’re brands were attached Disney the way others were.
Dove Cameron does feel like she’s right on the edge on superstardom, she just needs that Star Is Born moment.
Vis-a-vie China, colourism unfortunately play a part in her career. Zendaya herself has said she’s successful as she is because she’s “Hollywood’s version of an accessible black woman”. As Oscar worthy is Amandla Stenberg was in The Hate U Give (which ironically features a supporting role from Sabrina Carpenter), could China have always given that of performance as her, yes. She could. And given that the author had created the character of Star as a brown skinned black girl, it would’ve been more appropriate.
A quick glance at their Instagram followers and you’ll see this. Peyton, Sofia & Laura all have much Larger followed than her despite the fewer opportunities they’ve had than China.

She’s still the lead of the DC CW show which is a lot more than a lot working thespians can say.April 19, 2020 at 9:26 pm #1203436226
Colorism???? Um, she is a light skinned Black Girl. There are more opportunities for her compared to dark brown skinned girls. Plus she got into a beef with Anita Baker. You can’t attack a legend in music and expect to blow up.
Everyone isn’t going to blow up because they have talent. That is a simple fact. There are Black girls with more talent than China who have not accomplished half of what she did?April 20, 2020 at 1:37 am #1203436399
Of course I know everyone won’t blow up just because they have talent but China Anne had her own show on the Disney Channel and released music and so on. If you compare her to other Disney stars in similar positions it’s odd. Also the Anita Baker stuff was barely publicized.April 21, 2020 at 2:05 pm #1203439565
The Anita Baker stuff was barely publicized to the public, but I am sure the music industry knows of it. Anita is highly respected in the music industry and has influenced many artist. A newbie dissing her just for likes on social media can backfire. I am sure many producers, A&R’s, and label heads thought she was going to be a problem.
Imagine Beyoncé or Rihanna when they first came out dissing Whitney or Aretha. That would have been a bad look on their part.April 21, 2020 at 6:11 pm #1203439938
Cameron Boyce obviously passed away tragically almost a year ago so he shouldn’t be involved in this.
Compare Zendaya to China. Colorism plays a factor. After the Camp Rock era, no one was looking for the next big star that would come from that channel or at Nickelodeon. Also, you have to remember that the generation of iCarly, Hannah Montana, Suite Life, Victorious, etc. had all this press worldwide. It wasn’t only in teen magazines. Hollywood kept tabs on those stars. After that generation left, the public didn’t care about the next generation after them. Zendaya made the right moves compared to her peers due to connections and how she presented herself. Bella Thorne…..I don’t know what to say about her. She started fine and then she began to slip. Maybe that’s because of personal issues she dealt with like Lindsay and Amanda.
