Caveat: I’ve never seen Big Bang Theory.
Ok, I think we can all agree that Modern Family isn’t having its best season this year so a four-peat seems less than assured. The problem is that this not a single new comedy introduced by the networks this year is strong enough to dethrone Modern Family. In my opinion, the strongest new comedy this year is NBC’s “Go On” but no way I see it being nominated, let alone winning. So who can take the crown? It’s definitely possibly that Modern Family can reign victorious for a 4th yr in a row but I think we can all agree that the show hasn’t been at its best this year. So what show can take the crown the year? Parks & Rec, the show championed by critics year after year, has had a lackluster year and no comedy series has picked up the slack. Meanwhile, The Big Bang Theory has its detractors but its achieving series high in the ratings (last week had 19.25 million viewers) which is down right impressive in this day and age of dvr and syndication. This show isn’t as critically derided as 2.5 Men and 2 Broke Girls so I think the Emmys will go with the populist choice and award Big Bang Theory as the best comedy series of 2012 soley because of the ratings heights it has been able to achieve. Does anyone disagree with me and why?January 7, 2013 at 5:05 pm #268230
Assuming it’s eligible, I would keep an eye out for Arrested Development. Louie and 30 Rock are also possibilities.January 7, 2013 at 5:12 pm #268231
30 Rock might get a goddbye hug..January 7, 2013 at 5:20 pm #268232
I’ve never seen 30 Rock so don’t take this is as a criticism of the show but I really don’t see 30 Rock winning the emmy in its final year. It’s not on the level of Friends, Seinfeild, Frasier or Everybody Loves Raymond that were true pop culture phenomenons when they went off the air. That’s why I think Big Bang Theory is winning this year because it’s not critically embarassing and its bringing in the ratings that no sitcom has brought in since Friends nearly 10 yrs ago.January 7, 2013 at 5:23 pm #268233
no, it wontJanuary 7, 2013 at 5:32 pm #268234
Modern Family, Arrested Development, 30 Rock and maybe Girls all have greater chances of winning comedy series this year.January 7, 2013 at 5:40 pm #268236
Modern Family is going to win again. Voters aren’t as sentimental as we think. They’re not going to give 30 Rock the award just because it’s the last season. (They may reward Alec Baldwin though.)
I’m not sure if BBT will get nominated. It can easily be replaced by Louie or AD.January 7, 2013 at 5:41 pm #268237
IMO it should be either Parks and Rec, Veep, or 30 RockJanuary 7, 2013 at 5:44 pm #268238
A semi-Modern Family backlash along with 30 Rock ending its run and it having a set of likely good tapes puts it in a nice position. But MF will still be the frontrunner. TBBT will be a filler nominee, if it gets nominated at all. It’s taking the populist spot. If it were ever gonna win series it would have won by now. MF, 30 Rock and Arrested Development are the most likely to win. Girls has a chance if good buzz builds throughout its season. Nothing beyond those four shows are legit optionsJanuary 7, 2013 at 5:48 pm #268239
Wow! He has never seen 30 Rock or Big Bang Theory and wants to have a serious discussion about television.January 7, 2013 at 6:08 pm #268240
Icky, I know you don’t like Louie anymore, but really, Girls has a better chance than Louie? It was probably only snubbed this year on a fluke. He still set the record for the most nominations for a single person in a single year, and has won two last year. it’s perfectly possible the show finally gets in, and wins depending on the tapes.January 7, 2013 at 6:21 pm #268241
There you go making assumptions that personal taste effects my predictions. Yes, the third season was a step and a half behind season two’s greatness, but it was still my seventh or eighth show of the year. Girls wouldn’t have made my top fifteen. Girls is the newer show. It broke into comedy series, writing and directing in its debut year. It’s on HBO. It has a good chance at doing well at the Globes this year. And according to early reviews it’s funnier than last season. It’s in a better position than Louie. Even with Loius CK’s Emmy wins I think Louie only has an okay chance of making series, and the show’s limited appeal and lack of ha-ha episodes this season will hurt it in the tape system. There’s a gap between MF and the rest of the field. There’s another gap after 30 Rock and Arrested Development. I don’t think Girls’ chances are extremely greater than Louie’s. But it’s chances are better.January 7, 2013 at 6:58 pm #268242
No, no no no no .Marcus Snowden (The Artist Formerly Known as msnowden1)ParticipantJanuary 8, 2013 at 4:34 pm #268243
I wish it would, but I don’t think so. Emmy voters don’t like the subject matter of the show: Geeks and Geek Culture. Modern Family’s subject matter is traditional: Dysfunctional Families. Which one will Emmy voters choose? Personally, I think Louie should be in this category, but I know it won’t be nominated.
