Obviously I’ve only seen 6 eps of S2, but I agree with estrelas in that, so far, Strong feels very much like a supporting player to me. I, too, find Cox to be superior. He was so good in Hunting and Tern Haven! But I’ve heard that the finale really is Strong’s vehicle!

It’s not. While his character does something major, the performance or material isn’t any better than what he had to work with across the rest of the season. I think his best tape is episode 7 which you have next. He’s good in it but nothing like ‘Hunting’ for Cox.

    For Your Consideration:

Best International Feature: Instinct (The Netherlands)
Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)

If his best tape is “Return” then he’s not going to win in a million years. He was really good in it but that episode is very ensemble-ish and both Sarah Snook and Holly Hunter stole that episode for me. I’m not trying to diminish the quality of his performance, its an amazing one, but it’s very subtle and internal. We all know academy voters prefer showy and bigger performances.

FYC Emmys: Helena Bonham Carter (Drama Supporting Actress), Olivia Colman (Drama Actress), Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh (Drama Actress), Fiona Shaw (Drama Supporting Actress), Zendaya (Drama Actress), Alexis Bledel (Drama Guest Actress)

Snook literally steals every episode of the season though.

What I will say is that there definitely is a visible push for Strong as the critical ‘face’ of the show (I detailed what I think is the main reason why in the drama thread days ago), and I think that can counterbalance how subtle and internal the performance actually is.

Completely agree, so far she’s definetly my MVP of the season. Absolutely amazing. Cox and Macfadyen are also up there for me.

I can see why many people love his performance. It’s an emotional and very internal one. Its a performance that I can see many people indetify with. I just I don’t know…after you said his best tape is “Return” I just feel like he’s not going to be that much of a threat to Cox. I mean he’s basically the lead of the season and his performance is really powerful. Maybe they will indeed vote split and someone like Bateman or Odenkirk wins. We shall see…

I completely agree that, so far, Snook, Cox and Macfadyen are the standouts. Though honestly, I find the little I have seen from Cherry Jones and Holly Hunter to be equally impressive. They’re so in control of their characters.

Cherry Jones was amazing and she shouldve won an Emmy for a Guest performance like that. Not for that 45 seconds cameo… I still find Jane, Julie and Alexis much superior but she’s absolutely deserving of that nomination ( I also won’t be mad if she wins). Holly Hunter has been amazing as well and she was outstanding in “Return” (your next epsiode). Unfortunately she’s in a much more difficult category and sadly won’t get in. But tbh I wouldnt be surprised if she actually got nominated. She’s THAT good.

If Succession just blows up à la Handmaid’s S2, then I don’t see why Hunter wouldn’t get swept up. That said, I am not predicting it.

Strong is indeed more supporting than he was in the first season (and Cox is also more leading than before), but his work is also more nuanced.

Well if Holly Hunter gets swept up then there’s no doubt about what show is winning Drama Series.

FYC Emmys : Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve"), Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials"), Russell Tovery ("Years and Years"), Helena Bonham Carter ("The Crown") & The Crown, His Dark Materials, Years and Years, Succession and The Affair in all categories. The Politician : Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bette Midler and Judith Light.

FYC Goldderby Awards : MAURA TIERNEY AND DOMINIC WEST FOR THE FINAL SEASON OF THE AFFAIR

They are both fantastic but Jason Bateman is winning that Emmy, wrongfully so.

If it has to be one of the two, I still think it’s Cox. It’s the overall season performance to Strong’s two memorable moments (the rap and the final scene of the finale).

I guess I’m the only one who wasn’t impressed with Snook. I prefer J. Smith Cameron over her.

Why though? I guess some of us are not allowed to like Cameron over Snook.
