There has been a trend in the writing categories for shows to limit themselves to single submissions. There has been less success in trying that strategy in the directing categories because guest directors variably submit themselves. Writers tend to lazier with their ballots, by which I mean that shows are more likely to get multiple writing than directing nominations. But the writing ballot does not list names, so the writers are better at recognizing standout episodes, whereas the directors variably just check off the big names.

Drama writing last had a tie in 1988. Drama directing has had a tie in three of the last five years. Drama directing has even been prone to double-ties, like in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Comedy directing has also had ties in three of the last five years, but there is a new rule this year that the two-percent rule does not apply to any category that has proportional nominees, so comedy directing is fixed at six nominees going forward. Last year was the first year that mandated that the nominees be a proportional mix of single-camera and multi-camera nominees, with at least one of each, i.e. one multi-camera and the rest single-camera. Comedy writing last had a tie in 2000. Limited/movie writing last had a tie in 1986 and they doubled down by having a tie for the win too. Limited/movie directing has had a tie in two of the last five years.

I don’t know who’s directing the seasons or how they’ve been nominated before, so I’m just going to assume that there are no ties and just list what I think are the top six contenders for each category:

If there’s a time when GoT can take three slot at directing is this year for Emmy winners Miguel Sapochnik, David Nutter and Weis and Beniof. Also would be the right time to get a nod for Bryan Cogman in writing since W&B are a sure thing for a writing nod a second one shouldn’t be too difficult.

For Your Emmy Consideration: Best Comedy Series Sex Education, Comedy Lead Actor Asa Butterfield, Comedy Supporting Actress Guillian Anderson, Drama Supporting Actress Miranda Otto for The Chilling Adventure of Sabrina.

Mike Flanagan better get that directing nod for “Two Storms.” I mean, come on.

On the writing side I hope they’ll only submit the series finale, that way I think they can actually win. Otherwise might be a problem.  In directing it’s really likely they’ll have 3 nominees, I just hope Miguel’s episode will be so undeniable (like BotB) so it will win anyway

Limited Directing could be one of the strongest categories of the evening. Vallée and Stiller should both be locks; and they’re incredibly deserving nominees. Someone will certainly get in for Fosse/ Verdon. Flanagan would be my personal pick if he submits and gets in for “Two Storms;” what an achievement. Having seen true Detective now, I think their only worthy submission would be the first episode tbh.

His nomination in direction is the only possibility that I see for the show, but I think that he would be nominated for the whole series since he directed everything and not for a single episode.

Oh I totally forgot about that! That’s true, and it could actually help him 🙂

Could The Big Bang Theory Win Directing. It’s the one award that they keep get nominated for and I think the academy will won’t to award it something for its final series. It’s the longest running multi Camera Picture Show and the most watched network TV show.

Miguel Sapochnik’s Battle of Winterfell episode expected to actually be nearly fearue length- 82 minutes! This episode will make history, definitely the frontrunner in Directing now that The Crown is not competing.

It has a total of 1 (one) directing nominations.

I surely hope so. Miguel never disappoints. His three big episodes are also my three favorite episodes of the show. Hardhome, BotB, and The Winds of Winter.
