This fall, ABC will be presenting a live television production of the 2008 Tony nominated stage musical adaptation of Mel Brooks’ 1974 Academy Award nominated comedy, Young Frankenstein.

The stage version was not very successful, so this seems an odd choice. Guess they are going with the familiarity of the movie title.

I know a new and improved version of the show recently took place in London. I’m guessing that ABC is looking into the works of other comedy legends to revive for live TV events like what they’ve been doing with Norman Lear’s classic sitcoms. It should be interesting to see what the cast will end up looking like for this.

This is an extremely odd choice. The Producers would’ve made more sense as it was an enormous critical and commercial success. While the original film of Young Frankenstein is one of the greatest comedies of all time, the musical was not anywhere close to being as well received, being perceived by many as a letdown after Brooks’ first adaptation of his work as a musical was so dang popular. I seriously don’t understand why this was chosen instead of The Producers.
