Some new winners (finally done with the comedy side!):

     OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS
    IN A COMEDY SERIES:

    Mayim
    Bialik (The Big Bang Theory)

    Allison Janney (Mom)

    Chelsea
    Peretti (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

    Anna
    Chlumsky (Veep)

    Julie
    Bowen (Modern Family)

    Honorable:
    Sofia Vergara, Allison Williams

    OUTSTANDING
SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES:

    Timothy Simons (Veep)

    Ty
    Burrell (Modern Family)

    Tony
    Hale (Veep)

    James
    Wolk (The Crazy
    Ones)

    Zach
    Woods (Silicon
    Valley)

    Honorable:
Matt Walsh, Terry Crews, Joe Lo Truglio, Reid Scott, T.J. Miller, Eric
Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O’Neil, Nick Offerman, Adam Driver, Simon
    Helberg

    This was a very close
decision between Timothy Simons and Ty Burrell, but I went with the former
because he did much more with much less. In only ten episodes, Timothy Simons
went from being a power player in the white house to the creator of a
sensationalist gossip rag, to a bigwig at a rival campaign, and then back into
the white house again (in hilarious fashion).

    OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A
    COMEDY SERIES:

    Stephen Merchant (Modern Family)

    Andrew
    Rannells (Girls)

    Christopher
    Meloni (Veep)

    Nathan Lane (Modern Family)

    Christopher
    Evan Welch (Silicon
    Valley)

Honorable: Bob Newhart, Patton Oswalt, Louis C.K.

    OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A
    COMEDY SERIES:

    Ellen Burstyn (Louie)

    June Squibb (Girls)

    Celia
    Weston (Modern Family)

    Gaby
    Hoffman (Girls)

    Elizabeth
    Banks (Modern Family)

    Honorable: Melissa McCarthy, Tina Fey

An incredibly weak category. If I watched HIMYM, I’m
sure the result would be different.

     OUTSTANDING
    WRITING IN A COMEDY SERIES:

    “Back”
    (Louie) written by Louis C.K.

“Debate” (Veep) written by Armando Iannucci, David Quantick & Tony Roche

    “Optimum
    Tip-to-Tip Efficiency” (Silicon
    Valley)
     written by Alec Berg
    “Beach
    House” (Girls) written
by Lena Dunham, Judd Apatow & Jenni Konner

    “Message Received” (Modern Family) written
    by Steven Levitan

    Honorable:
    “Cooperative Polygraphy”, “Las Vegas”, “Three
Dinners”, “The Wedding (Part 2)”, “The Cones of
Dunshire”, “The Scavenger Vortex”, “Some New
    Beginnings”, “The Choice”, “Alicia”, “Special
Relationship”, “So Did the Fat Lady”

    When selecting a winner
for this category, I was struck with a peculiar choice. Do I go with the five
minute dick joke, or do I pick a thoughtful examination of a father/son
relationship on the eve of a gay wedding? After struggling for a little while,
I decided on the latter because of the show’s uncharacteristic refusal to make
the situation into one big joke. It was the fact that the writers were not afraid to leave their characters in
such a dark place before the two-part finale, sans punch line, which impressed
me the most. “Message Received” is simply Modern
    Family
    at its best.

    OUTSTANDING
    DIRECTING IN A COMEDY SERIES:

    “Beach
    House” (Girls) directed
    by Jesse Peretz

    “Las Vegas” (Modern Family) directed
    by Gail Mancuso

    “Coming
    and Going” (Children’s
    Hospital)
     directed by Dan Kwan

    “Special
    Relationship” (Veep) directed
    by Becky Martin

    “Charges
    and Specs” (Brooklyn
    Nine-Nine)
     directed by Akiva Schaffer

Beautifully plotted and brimming with outstanding
guest stars, “Las Vegas” is farce done perfectly. If you haven’t seen it, you’re
missing out on one of the funniest half hours in years.

     Nomination Totals:
    Modern Family: 10 (Series,
supporting actor, supporting actress, guest actor x2, guest actress x2,
    writing, directing, cast)
    Veep: 9 (Series, lead actress,

    Girls: 6 (lead actress, guest
actor, guest actress x2, writing, directing)

    guest actress, writing)

    Silicon Valley: 4 (Series,
    supporting actor, guest actor, writing)

    Brooklyn Nine-Nine: 3 (lead
    actor, supporting actress, directing)

    Review:
    2 (Series, lead actor)

The Crazy Ones: 2 (lead actor,
    supporting actor)

    The
Big Bang Theory: 2 (lead actor, supporting actress)

    Mom: 2
    (lead actress, supporting actress)

    Parks & Recreation: 1
    (lead actress)

    Children’s Hospital: 1
    (directing)

    Win Leaders:
Veep: 3 (series, lead actress, supporting actor)
Modern Family: 3 (Guest actor, writing, directing)
    Review: 1 (lead actor)
    Mom: 1 (supporting actress)
    Girls: 1 (guest actress)

So, Louie has not finished airing yet. Depending on the final two episodes, I may actually drop it for Girls in comedy series. We’ll see… Unless the episodes are the best of the series, none of the winners will change.

    Quick winners for comedy:
    Series: Veep
    Lead Actress: Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep)
    Lead Actor: Andy Daly (Review)
    Supporting Actress: Allison Janney (Mom)
    Supporting Actor: Timothy Simons (Veep)
Guest Actor: Nathan Lane (Modern Family)
    Guest Actress: June Squibb (Girls)
    Writing: “Message Received” (Modern Family)
    Directing: “Las Vegas” (Modern Family)

When GoT and Fargo conclude, I will have my drama winners ready. It is extremely close.

    7.    “Buridan’s Ass” (Fargo)

    8.    “Felina” (Breaking Bad)

    9.    “Can’t Fix Crazy” (Orange Is the New Black)

    10.  “Waterloo” (Mad Men)

Top ten shows of 2014 (+/- position change since last year. + means that the show moved closer to the number one spot):

    10. Girls (-4)
    9. Mad Men (unlisted)
    8. Review (*new*)
    7. Modern Family (+3)
    6. Orange Is The New Black (-1)
    5. Survivor Season 28: Brawn vs. Brain vs. Beauty (+4)

    4. Shameless (+4)

    3. Fargo (*new*)

    2. Veep (+1)

    1.

I chose to give my final award (outstanding cast) to the cast of Shameless. In pretty much all of the other ensembles, I could find a weak link (Kit Harington in Game of Thrones, Laura Prepon in OITNB, Vergara in MF), but I couldn’t find one in Shameless. The most impressive thing about S4 is how much the other castmembers rose to the occasion when Emmy Rossum was on the sidelines. This was the year that the actors playing Carl and Debbie had their own full-fledged storylines, and they both killed it! When you throw in a breakout performance from Noel Fisher, continued greatness by Jeremy Allen White and Emmy Rossum, a towering performance from Emily Bergl, it becomes a no-brainer. Depending on how I feel about Fargo at the end of the year, Shameless may advance to the #3 position on my 2014 list.

Apologies to: Masters of Sex, Louie, Girls, Aaron Paul, Charlie Day, Zach Woods.

Other than LCK, I don’t really passionately love any of my Comedy Lead Actors. I should watch Review. The Emmy categories that annoyed me most were Comedy Series, Drama Actress (none of my passionately loved top 3) and Drama Supporting Actor (none of my top 6, though I had more than six strong candidates which would certainly include Aaron Paul).

When I have time, I’ll glance at the ballots for Writing and Directing then come back to list those. “Ozymandias” will not win for either.
