Imelda, Dominic and Andrew? It’s a Pride reunion! All we need now is Paddy Considine.

That being said I can see where they got the idea of casting him from. Part of Blair’s appeal in the 90s was that he was more of a popular public figure rather than a traditional British politician. He would be presenting at awards shows, appearing on magazine covers with some of the most famous British bands etc.

I think a user pointed out about how Scott gained fame from Sherlock (robbed of the supporting actor Emmy btw) and that is correct but post Fleabag, Andrew Scott has become more of a household name over here. He’s probably not as much of a “popular figure” as Tony Blair was in the 90s but “the hot priest” was the most talked moment of television in 2019 (I would say one of the biggest pop cultural moments in recent times but that might be going too far). So I can understand the logic.

It’s partly why I’m very interested to see who are the casting decision here because you can sometimes see the intentions the casting directors and producers have in trying to bring these well known figures from recent times into a popular fictionalised drama. Whilst we could poke fun at Anderson’s casting and say it was due to nepotism, my guess is that part of why she was chosen is because of how much of a dedicated and prestigious thespian she is (and more importantly how she’s known to audiences as a dedicated and prestigious thespian).

FYC Emmys: "The Crown" in all categories, "I May Destroy You" in all categories, "It's a Sin" in all categories, "Small Axe" in all categories, Billie Piper ("I Hate Suzie"), Yvonne Strahovski ("Stateless") and Ruth Wilson ("His Dark Materials")

And Bill Nighy and Monica Dolan!

I’d like to see Keeley Hawes as Cherie Blair to Andrew Scott’s Tony Blair.

And Bill Nighy and Monica Dolan!

Inb4 Bill Nighy is cast as John Major lol.

Monica would be amazing! I’ve been truly impressed by her in everything I’ve seen her in so far.  A truly transformative actress and I’m glad the British awards bodies are showering her with love. I remember seeing her on stage in All About Eve and she truly took my breath away with such a distinctive scene-stealing performance that could have been quite thankless with any other performer in the role. I also thought her BAFTA nomination for A Very English Scandal was well deserved (even though I thought Eve Myles gave a better performance than she did on the show).

I guess she would be a good Cherie Blair. Or even a good Camilla.

I also thought Monica Dolan was just terrific in The Dig as Basil Brown’s wife. It could have been a thankless role but I loved her scenes with Ralph Fiennes.

I prefer Kelley Hawes as Cherie Blair; I think Dolan could be great as Camilla— it’ll be an interesting transition from Emerald Fennell.

I forgot she was in The Dig!

I hope Keeley Hawes is cast as Cherie Blair as well. Not only because I think she’s an excellent actress but also I feel like she would be great at emulating Blair’s sharp mannerisms and snarky tone.

For me, the ultimate Monica Dolan role is Senior Communications Executive Tracey Pritchard in W1A. An absolute dream combination of the perfect character and perfect actress. She’s one of those actresses who elevates everything she touches.

wolfali, it’s funny you mentioned Eve Myles in A Very English Scandal. Seeing her name mentioned, I think she could also be a pretty wonderful Cherie.

Hawes is taller than Scott. It’ll be the man doing scenes standing on the boxes this time. She’s either same height or taller than Prince Charles too based on that video of her meeting him.

    Hawes is taller than Scott.

Judging by the fact that Elizabeth Debicki is half a foot taller than Emma Corrin I don’t think the producers and casting directors of The Crown pay attention to this too much.

Then again in that case maybe Monica Dolan should play Cherie and Hawes should play Camilla.
