Michael Urie will star in an off-Broadway revival of Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song Trilogy this fall, directed by Moises Kaufman. Fierstein has rewritten some parts of the play and as a result, it will be billed as just Torch Song. http://www.broadway.com/buzz/187582/michael-urie-will-star-in-harvey-fiersteins-torch-song-off-broadway/February 16, 2017 at 10:42 am #1202013426

The long-delayed Public Theater production of Hamlet starring Oscar Isaac will finally run this summer from July 13 to September 3. http://www.broadway.com/buzz/187688/oscar-isaac-to-headline-hamlet-at-the-public-theater-co-starring-keegan-michael-key-peter-friedman-more/March 6, 2017 at 11:46 am #1202030598
Bartlett Sher will direct a new production of My Fair Lady at the Vivian Beaumont at Lincoln Center, set to open on April 19, 2018:
Let the casting fantasies begin! (Let’s hope this production is better than that odd Richard Chamberlain production from 1993 that had the weird glowing head on the set.)March 6, 2017 at 3:36 pm #1202030727
Since Bartlett Sher is directing, I wonder if he might find a role for Danny Burstein to play.
Colin Firth has been mentioned for Henry Higgins, which sounds like a perfect idea. But if that doesn’t workout, maybe Danny could play the role. If not, I could see him as Alfred P. Doolittle.March 6, 2017 at 3:55 pm #1202030747
Yes, I would definitely be psyched to see Colin Firth play Higgins.March 7, 2017 at 6:52 am #1202031195
I doubt Danny would be cast as Higgins but he would make a perfect Alfred. Higgins is a prime target for major star casting. As Rex Harrison proved, the role can be played by someone who isn’t the most robust singer. I imagine it will follow a similar path to Sher’s “King and I” casting: famous movie star leading man to “talk sing” Higgins, and a Broadway star for the leading lady.
Praying to Dionysus and any other theater god that will listen to cast Laura Benanti as Eliza. Such a perfect role for her that combines all her greatest strengths. Think about how epic her “I Could Have Danced All Night” would be.March 8, 2017 at 9:22 am #1202032047
I would be willing to overlook the fact that Benanti is too old for Eliza just to hear her do “I Could Have Danced All Night”. And just imagine her ripping through “Just You Wait” with that velvet-coated steel demeanor she can project.March 9, 2017 at 2:07 pm #1202033150
She’s only slightly older than Audrey Hepburn was when she played Eliza in the film version.March 17, 2017 at 9:59 am #1202039172
A production of 1984, adapted from the Orwell novel, will open at the Hudson Theatre on June 22, following the current hit run of Sunday in the Park with George. It played London at the Almeida Theatre.March 20, 2017 at 11:49 am #1202041647
The recent Off-Broadway revival of Sweet Charity starring Sutton Foster may transfer to Broadway next season. http://www.broadway.com/buzz/187969/sweet-charity-with-sutton-foster-may-play-broadway-next-season/March 22, 2017 at 11:04 am #1202043600
Tina Fey’s musical adaptation of Mean Girls gets a full production at the National in Washington, D.C. this fall. Casey Nicholaw is directing, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this one made it to the Main Stem sooner rather than later:
