Nominations have been announced for this year’s Lucille Lortel Awards, which recognizes the best of the season off-Broadway. Some of this year’s contenders will also be competing at this year’s Tony Awards for their Broadway transfers such as Dear Evan Hansen, Indecent, Oslo, and Sweat.

Quite a lot of love for Sweet Charity and Sweeney Todd. I’ve heard that this production of Sweeney Todd actually serves meat pies and mashed potatoes before each show, which makes me want to see it. And I remember seeing The Wolves on Ben Brantley’s best of 2016 list.

Among the winners who are competing at this year’s Tony Awards, Dear Evan Hansen won two for Lead Actor in a Musical (Ben Platt) and Featured Actress in a Musical (Rachel Bay Jones). Oslo won four for Outstanding Play, Lead Actress in a Play (Jennifer Ehle), Featured Actor in a Play (Michael Aronov), and Outstanding Director (Bartlett Sher).

Dear Evan Hansen losing the Musical award to The Band’s Visit is a shocker, but it looks like it will be a formidable player next year.
