Sorry if wrong thread or if already discussed but I feel like so far for next season there have been no original scores announced? Only Jukebox musicals and revivals?July 10, 2019 at 3:32 pm #1202969912
As of now, no new musical with an original score has been officially announced for Broadway yet. I’m not sure how those snobby Tony voters are going to respond to jukebox musicals like Moulin Rouge!, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, and Jagged Little Pill. Though Girl From the North Country appears to be doing something completely different from the genre. As for non-jukebox musicals that could potentially come in, there is Almost Famous, The Flamingo Kid, Lempicka, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Six.July 10, 2019 at 5:56 pm #1202970044
If I had to guess a potential Tony winner for Best Musical from that lineup right now, it would probably be Girl From The North Country, because Bob Dylan is universally hailed as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and it got a lot of raves when it premiered Off-Broadway last year.July 11, 2019 at 8:21 am #1202970697
Slave Play, which was previously produced Off-Broadway last year, will be transferring to the John Golden Theatre on Broadway this fall.
Now, it’s been officially confirmed.

If Girl From The North Country wins Best Musical it will follow the recent trend of West End transfers winning the top Tonys. The only thing that stopped it from winning Best Musical at the Oliviers was the juggernaut known as Hamilton, though it still did well against it. It’s still too early… we have a long way to go.July 11, 2019 at 3:19 pm #1202971425
Not to mention that Girl From the North Country would also the follow the trend of recent Best Musical winners like Fun Home, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, The Band’s Visit, and Hadestown as shows that moved from Off-Broadway to Broadway.July 18, 2019 at 5:49 am #1202982599
Brian Cox, Marc Kudisch, Grantham Coleman, and Richard Thomas will star in The Great Society, playwright Robert Schenkkan’s follow-up to the Tony-winning All the Way. The play continues the story of the presidency of LBJ. It starts performances 9/6/19 at the Vivian Beaumont for a 12-week limited run.July 18, 2019 at 6:20 am #1202982614
If Marc Kudisch ends up staying if Girl From the North Country, this is going to be quite a busy Broadway season for him.July 18, 2019 at 12:16 pm #1202983369
