Lucky you. I was too young to see it, as I had just finished kindergarten. Plus, I don’t live in New York City, so there’s that, too. I can only imagine what it was like seeing both her and Audra McDonald live on stage.February 22, 2020 at 8:16 am #1203356393
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences recently updated their list of deceased Oscar voters, and two of them included actors with Broadway credits to their names.
First, there’s actor Steven Marlo, who passed away on November 7. He appeared on Broadway a couple of times in the 1950s, most notably the original production of William Inge’s Picnic alongside Paul Newman. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/heraldnet/obituary.aspx?n=steve-marlo&pid=194470517
Although, in order to find these credits on IBDB, you’d have to look them up under Marlo’s original birth name Morris Miller. https://www.ibdb.com/broadway-cast-staff/morris-miller-94615
Also, there’s actor Robert Harper, who passed away on January 23. His Broadway credits included the 1978 revival of Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s Once In A Lifetime, and Arthur Miller’s 1980 play The American Clock. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/nytimes/obituary.aspx?n=robert-harper&pid=195209907February 26, 2020 at 4:46 pm #1203361920

I got to see Peter play Gaston in a local production of Beauty & the Beast in 2017, and I thought he stole the show. Very sad to hear about this.March 1, 2020 at 11:54 am #1203365977

He was an actor in the Lillian Helman play The Autumn Garden, the book writer and lyricist of the musicals Nowhere To Go But Up and Sherry!, and the producer of the plays The Mighty Gents and Monteith & Rand. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/james-lipton-dead-actors-studio-909382March 2, 2020 at 7:15 pm #1203368158

According to Michael Musto, award-winning playwright Mart Crowley has died at the age of 84.
After graduating from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in 1957 (where he studied acting and show business), Crowley went out to Hollywood where he worked for a number of television production companies. In 1960, he met actress Natalie Wood while working as an assistant to director Elia Kazan during principal photography of Splendor in the Grass. After filming wrapped up, Mart became Natalie’s assistant and secretary for many years until her premature death in 1981. She even encouraged him to write a play he felt very passionate about in his spare time, which would become The Boys in the Band. Though in the early stages, it was hard for Mart find producers and theater owners who were interested as a lot of agents stayed away from the project due to its subject matter of LGBT. But it was championed by playwright Edward Albee and Richard Barr, who at the time was head of the Playwrights Units in New York. For the production, it proved “nearly impossible to find” actors willing to play gay characters. An old college friend of Crowley’s, 33-year-old Laurence Luckinbill, agreed to play Hank despite warnings from his agent that it would end his career, even though the agent was herself a lesbian. When The Boys in the Band premiered Off-Broadway in 1968, it was originally only scheduled to play five performances, and that was it. Yet, the original production became a fast success, and was able to spawn multiple productions as well as a 1970 film adaptation directed by William Friedkin which kept the original cast intact. In 2018, The Boys in the Band made its long-awaited Broadway debut with an all-star cast courtesy of producer Ryan Murphy. That production ended up winning last year’s Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play, where Mart even received an accolade himself. A new film adaptation of The Boys in the Band is set to debut on Netflix later this year with the entire cast of the Broadway production reprising their roles.March 9, 2020 at 5:45 am #1203375585

Actor Merwin Foard has died at the age of 59.
He had performed on Broadway 15 times over the course of 32 years, which included appearances in the original casts of Beauty & the Beast, The Little Mermaid, The Addams Family, and Aladdin. He also performed in the chorus for three major Disney animated films, 1995’s Pocahontas, 1996’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and 1998’s Mulan. I myself had the pleasure of seeing him as FDR in the most recent Broadway revival of Annie, Max Detweiler in the 2015 national tour of The Sound of Music, and Joseph Pulitzer in a 2018 local production of Newsies.March 17, 2020 at 11:00 am #1203384386
