Since there’s only two more days until the nominations announced, what do you think will be the biggest contenders? On the plays side, I think it will be Leopoldstadt. On the musicals side, i think it will be Dear Evan Hansen.

Interesting picks. Being American, I have no idea what’s going to win, but I made a try at predicting last year, and I got about half of my predictions right. Here’s hoping I’ll be right again this year. I’ll probably wait until the week before the ceremony before making my predictions, though.

I actually do have a prediction I’ll make right now. I usually never pay attention to opera, and I have no idea what will ultimately win, but I’m going to take a chance and bet Noye’s Fludde will win both opera categories. The only reason why I’m predicting it is that it’s the only opera among the nominees I’m somewhat familiar with. And the only reason I even know about that opera in the first place is that its music is heavily featured in the movie Moonrise Kingdom, one of the best coming of age movies of the 21st century.

I absolutely love the Olivier awards website and how they display the nominees! (: I wish the Tony awards would learn from them and do the same! (:

I find it interesting how the supporting players nominated for Dear Evan Hansen are the actors portraying Zoe, Larry, Cynthia, and Jared. This contrasts with the Broadway production where the only supporting actors nominated were Rachel Bay Jones and Mike Faist who played Heidi and Connor. It’s particularly interesting to me that Heidi’s actress didn’t make it when two other supporting actresses did, since in addition to the character of Heidi being the second largest role in the show, I’d say, second only to the titular character, she’s the best written and has the biggest showcase.

It’s always interesting how the Oliviers differ from the Tonys. Like Idina Menzel won the Tony for the Broadway production of Wicked, yet she didn’t even receive an Olivier nomination for the West End production

While a lot of major events around the world have been canceled due to fears of the coronavirus spreading, it looks like the Oliviers are still going to happen on April 5. https://variety.com/2020/legit/news/uk-theaters-no-clear-rationale-to-cancel-shows-1203527777/

Like how Mark Harris pointed out how appropriate it was that Daveed Diggs won Best Featured Actor in a Musical at the Tonys for playing Lafayette/Jefferson in “Hamilton”, while the London production the actor playing King George won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical.

West End theaters are now officially closing. https://www.playbill.com/article/londons-west-end-and-more-uk-theatres-shut-down-in-response-to-coronavirus-concerns

No word yet on what this means for the Oliviers, but I can’t imagine them continuing to be on April 5, at least with a live audience. Who knows what will happen.

I don’t know if the Special Awards recipients managed to receive their awards on Friday night. They included:

    Children’s casting director Jo Hawes.

    Producer Thelma Holt.

Mountview Chief Executives Stephen Jameson and Sarah Preece.

    Theater consultant Peter Roberts.
