As of now ten straight plays have been nominated for Best Score, though with the frequency of jukebox musicals there will be many more in the years ahead.

My prediction for the nominees for Best Book:

    Girl from the North Country
    Jagged Little Pill
    Moulin Rouge
    Mrs. Doubtfire
    Six

We should definitely keep a look out for Flying Over Sunset. James Lapine is a legendary playwright, so he should never be counted out for a nomination.

Then I’ll replace Moulin Rouge with Flying Over Sunset.

I think Moulin Rouge! is getting in no matter what. It’s basically the 2019-2020 season equivalent of Wicked.

Unless Diana, Flying Over Sunset, and Mrs. Doubtfire all end up being very well embraced by the industry. Though of those three, Diana appears to be the least likely right now given its underwhelming critical reception from out-of-town, but I guess we’ll see if the creative team is even able to work out all the problems.

I would pick Flying Over Sunset for Best Book but not Moulin Rouge!

Moulin Rouge! is never destined to win a writing award. Even the original movie failed to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay (which shouldn’t be surprising given how much the writers branch of the academy tends to thumb their noses at musicals). Though with that being said, I still think Girl From the North Country is the frontrunner to win Best Book of a Musical.

I think Girl from the North Country will win Best Book and Six Best Score, though it’s hard to tell which one will win Best Musical. It looks like they’re the two frontrunners, but you never know. Back in 1966 Best Musical was considered a race between Mame and Sweet Charity, and both were beaten by Man of La Mancha.

I think American Utopia will be up for Best Choreography. If they bring back Best Special Theatrical Event I hope they nominate Derren Brown: Secret, American Utopia and Freestyle Love Supreme.

If Best Special Theatrical Event does get revived, it sadly won’t be in time for this year’s Tony Awards given that eligibility has already began. Like when it was announced in 2017 that both sound design categories were going to be brought back, it was too late in the season for them to be used for the ceremony that year.

Well at least one special event should get a special Tony.

American Utopia will probably at least win the Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience. Maybe at the Tonys, David Byrne will get a Special Tony Award like Bruce Springsteen.

I hope Derren Brown gets a special Tony. His show is just amazing.

This season only five new musicals are eligible for Best Score. The same thing happened in 1986, when of the eleven new musicals, five had preexisting music and one was a dance show without a real score. Also in 1989 there were five new musicals with original scores but the category of Best Score was dropped, as if their music wasn’t considered worthy. Some years there are so many shows that good ones get overlooked, and other years shows with lackluster scores get nominated just to fill the category.
