So far there will be three shows on Broadway next season: Birthday Candles, Sing Street, Trouble in Mind, and possibly Once Upon a One More Time. Hoping there will be others, or at least that the pandemic won’t get in the way.
ReplySeptember 20, 2020 at 1:41 pm #1203720929I think we can forget about Once Upon A One More Time. I know Broadway will be looking to get as many hits as possible once theaters begin to re-open, but I highly doubt a Britney Spears jukebox fairytale musical is going to bring in money. When people think of Broadway, they don’t think of Britney Spears, and vice versa. They’ll probably be hoping MJ will bring in the big bucks, even though I personally think it’s wrong to create a musical about him in the wake of Leaving Neverland, as I fully believe Wade Robson and James Safechuck’s allegations of abuse.

First of all, I highly doubt Broadway will be looking to get as many hits as possible once theaters begin to re-open. I’m sure that The Broadway League is hopeful that audiences will be more than ready to come back. Though in the movie business, Steven Spielberg once said that you should never count on your film to be a big hit unless of course it’s a sequel. Second of all, whether people believe Robson and Safechuck’s allegations or not, there’s no denying that the HBO documentary, Leaving Neverland, was able to provide a boost in sales of Michael Jackson’s music.

I’m not crazy about his Broadway work, particularly his forgettable score for Billy Elliot, and the fact that he doesn’t attend the rehearsals of his own shows. But Shaina Taub is working on that show as well, as I like her work.
