Claire Booth Luce, Cary Grant and Aldous Huxley drop acid together…sounds like a joke, doesn’t it?

I can imagine one of the hallucinations Cary saw was a world where all the leading men in movies were immature schlubs like Seth Rogan and Adam Sandler.

Also, will Waitress qualify for Best Revival? And would Sara Bareilles be up for an acting Tony?

According to the rules, there must be at least a three-year gap between two productions of the same material in order for the second to be eligible for Tonys. Waitress closed back in January of 2020, so the return engagement will be ineligible.

So is there a comprehensive list of NEW shows announced for this season? I can’t quite find that here or on the Broadway site.

Thank you. Could you sort them into musicals, plays, special events, originals and revivals?

Thank you, however I see Waitress and Freestyle Love Supreme aren’t listed. And I’m not sure about Sing Street or Romeo and Bernadette. At least there will be four candidates for the Best Revival of a Musical and seven for the Best Musical Tony.

By the Tonys rules that means there will be three Best Revival nominees and four Best Musical nominees. I predict for Best Revival:

    Caroline, or Change
    Company
    The Music Man

I felt West Side Story was too controversial. At least one Sondheim show will be in there. For Best Musical:

    Diana
    Flying Over Sunset
    Girl from the North Country
    Six

^What makes you think Diana will make the cut for Best Musical? I know the show wasn’t well received when it premiered at La Jolla, and I honestly don’t remember what the reports were from when it started previews on Broadway last year.

Well Diana could have improved, after all Beetlejuice didn’t do well in previews but it still got a Best Musical nod (even though I think the position should have gone to Head Over Heels). I just thought Diana would have a better chance than MJ, Mrs. Doubtfire or Paradise Square. But if Sing Street comes to Broadway this season, I think that will get the slot over Diana.

Although I think Beetlejuice mainly ended up taking the fifth slot for one of two reasons (or both):

    1. While the show wasn’t a big critical hit, it at least proved to be a crowdpleaser with audiences. So maybe there were some people on the nominating committee who enjoyed the show more than critics did.

    2. There probably wasn’t a clear alternative to what could’ve taken the fifth slot instead. A lot of us were predicting it to go to Be More Chill, but it likely skewed very young, and Tony nominators are obviously much older than that. The fact that the show way underperformed in nominations gives me doubt that it even came close. It only received one bid for Best Original Score in a field of six contenders. I’m guessing the fifth slot in that category was a close race between Be More Chill and To Kill a Mockingbird.

With Diana, it will certainly have extra publicity with its proshot taping premiering on Netflix this October. Although I remember the early preview reports for Mrs. Doubtfire were pretty favorable.

I know BMC didn’t do too well outside of younger audiences, frankly it was just another story about a whiny white boy. However if Sing Street and Romeo and Bernadette come to the Main Stem, we’ll have nine eligible new musicals, meaning five nominees. I guess they would be North Country, Six, Sing Street, Diana and Mrs. Doubtfire.
