Due to a shortfall in capitalization and following the withdrawal of a lead producer, the Broadway premiere of Room has been postponed indefinitely.

March 18, 2023 at 9:15 am #1205356296Looks like this could overtake Into The Woods as the frontrunner for Best Revival Of A Musical, especially since it will still be playing when Tony voting commences.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 18, 2023 at 9:16 am #1205356300A real shame. I just hope it opens eventually.
Hopefully if it ever does open, the original film’s stars Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay will come to see it.

Keep in mind that Into the Woods could still benefit from the portal system. If voters didn’t log that production, they won’t be given categories where it’ll be nominated in on their ballots because they were unable to see the show during its limited run. Although I can see Parade (or Camelot) benefitting from a potential vote split between the two Sondheim revivals in contention.

Don’t forget, that rule doesn’t apply to this season so voters will still be able to vote even if they didn’t see all the shows. This may work against Into the Woods, but it just won the Grammy so it should still be the frontrunner:
ReplyCopy URLMarch 19, 2023 at 5:02 pm #1205357361So the three shoo-ins for Best Revival of a Musical are Into the Woods, Parade and Sweeney Todd. Two Sondheim shows and two City Center shows. I’m not sure if the fourth slot will go to Dancin’ or Camelot.

I wouldn’t call Sweeney Todd a shoo-in yet. I’ve read some reports in the BroadwayWorld message boards from people who think that revival in its current state is good, but not great. Wait until the production officially opens. Awards predictors definitely should’ve learned this by now as evidenced by Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light, and Florian Zeller’s The Son all expected to be major contenders this past Oscar season…before anyone even saw them. When people did start seeing them, the reactions were all like “Eh. Never mind.”
ReplyCopy URLMarch 19, 2023 at 5:57 pm #1205357376At least ITW and Parade are still frontrunners, while 1776 is out. It looks like Dancin’ has gotten favorable reviews, if only for, well, the dancin’. Of course since it’s been done before it’s not eligible for Best Choreography.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 19, 2023 at 6:25 pm #1205357387Dancin’ could be in a similar position to the most recent revival of Sunset Boulevard. Mainly in how it was a possibility for a Best Musical Revival nomination, but there was the question of what other categories it could show up in. Glenn Close wasn’t eligible for Best Lead Actress in a Musical due to her having already won that award for the original production back in 1995. None of the other principal cast members (nor design elements) were seen as standouts. People were thinking Best Orchestrations given that one of the most talked about aspects of that revival was the 40-piece orchestra playing on the stage of the Palace Theatre. Although since it had the same credited orchestrators as before, I guess there might’ve been a question of “How much of the work this time around is new?.” On nomination morning, Sunset Boulevard was completely shut out.
With Dancin’, the most I can see it getting right now is Best Lighting Design of a Musical. While the original production received two acting nominations, the ensemble nature of the show could still prevent any of its cast members from gaining traction. Anyway, according to Did They Like It?, the overall critical response has been mixed-to-positive.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/tony-awards-rules-that-voters-shows-season-1235315473/Yes, but only if voters missed just one of the nominees in a specific category. If they missed more than one…different story.
