My mother saw the original and revival Dancin’ and she liked the former better. She wasn’t fond of the tech in the revival, or how they added parts of Fosse shows when the original was entirely firsthand material.
So now the question is which two of Camelot, Dancin’ or Sweeney will get nominated. What about Cliento’s chance of Best Director?
ReplyCopy URLMarch 19, 2023 at 7:09 pm #1205357408Although it’s still possible for there to be 5 Best Musical Revival nominees, but only if there’s a close enough race between two shows in the nominating process. From what I’ve been reading of preview reports for both Camelot and Sweeney Todd, I have a feeling they’re gonna do better in acting and design nominations at least.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 19, 2023 at 7:14 pm #1205357413As for Best Musical and Best Musical Revival there are two openings, each with three contenders, so it’s now a matter of which one is least likely to get in. I’m leaning against Bad Cinderella, since Shucked seems to have a more favorable reception, as it’s not trying to be more than silly fun.

March 24, 2023 at 8:24 am #1205362342It seems Bad Cinderella will not be up for Best Musical. Is KPOP still a contender? Even if it isn’t I think it deserved better than seventeen performances.

It really depends on the reception for New York, New York. I’m probably leaning more against KPOP because it was so short-lived and had tons of problems.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 24, 2023 at 1:23 pm #1205362738I currently have KPOP taking the fifth slot as a placeholder. I recently subscribed to the New York, New York thread in the BroadwayWorld message boards. As that show will be starting previews tonight, I’m looking forward to reading all the reports. Especially given how that show to me is a real question mark right now.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 24, 2023 at 2:49 pm #1205362849I’m personally not predicting anything until other groups like the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards announce their nominees first. Then I will have a good idea at how the Tony nominations might look.

Hopefully this show isn’t as bad as that garbage trainwreck of a film Cinderella starring Camila Cabello. I meant it in all seriousness when I said in my review of that film that my middle school 20 years ago put on a better production of Cinderella.

-Anna Uzele & Colton Ryan are both delivering star-making turns.
-Susan Stroman’s choreography is incredible.
-People are raving about the set design.
-The show could use some trimming.
