https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/fiddler-roof-star-chaim-topol-dies-87-rcna74100He was best known for spending many years playing Tevye in the classic musical, Fiddler on the Roof. His journey with that part began in an Israeli production back in 1966 when he was just 30 years old. Topol went on to open the original London production the following year. During his run, filmmaker Norman Jewison, who at that point was already slated to direct a movie adaptation of Fiddler, came to see it and felt he found his Tevye. For his performance in the film, Topol won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Comedy/Musical and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Since then, he continued to play Tevye on stage for more than 3,500 performances over the years. One of the productions he headlined was the third Broadway revival from 1990-91, earning him a Tony nomination for Best Lead Actor in a Musical.
