No host has been announced yet for this year’s Tony Awards. It appears to be different every year as to when we get an announcement regarding the host. Sometimes, they’re revealed about a couple weeks before the nominations are (like Josh Groban & Sara Bareilles in 2018). Sometimes, they’re announced a few months in advance (like Hugh Jackman in 2014 and James Corden in 2016). Kristin Chenoweth & Alan Cumming were announced as hosts for the 2015 ceremony the same day nominations were. I remember that three of the four years Neil Patrick Harris hosted (in 2009, 2011, and 2013), he wasn’t announced until sometime after nominations were revealed.
For a while, I’ve been thinking that Hugh Jackman would at least be asked back this year. He’s hosted four times before, the second time he did so back in 2004 was while he was in the middle of his very first Broadway run in The Boy From Oz. So I wondered if he’d be willing to do that again (host while he’s in the middle of his current run in The Music Man). If Jackman does return, he would then tie with Angela Lansbury as the record holder for hosting the most Tony ceremonies (which would be five times overall).
Though I can also see Billy Crystal being asked. He has hosted nine Academy Awards telecasts to great acclaim over the years, and he’s also currently on Broadway in Mr. Saturday Night. In fact, the very first Tony telecast I ever watched was in 2005. One moment from it I definitely remember is this bit from the beginning that involved Billy Crystal and Hugh Jackman.
So while we wait for an announcement, who would you like to see host the Tonys?
ReplyApril 30, 2022 at 12:33 am #1204937688Neil Patrick Harris, who’s arguable the best of (relatively) recent hosts, has not hosted in ages. I can see him back as well. I think they’d want a really big opening this year, like the one he did in 2013.

ReplyCopy URLMay 1, 2022 at 11:35 pm #1204939375You can’t count last year as a real Tony telecast. Last year should be forgotten altogether. This year they’ll be going back to normal. I’m thinking they’ll get someone like James Corden again.
ReplyCopy URLMay 2, 2022 at 2:45 am #1204939473Since it was recently announced that James Corden will be leaving The Late Late Show next year, I have been wondering if we should expect to see at least one more hosting stint from him as an official in-house talent at CBS.
ReplyCopy URLMay 2, 2022 at 3:50 am #1204939493I was wondering if maybe to lighten the load on both of them since they are older and starring onstage these days they have Billy and Hugh host together? Have them do the opening together, trade off sections, then show up together at the end?
ReplyCopy URLMay 2, 2022 at 9:44 am #1204939737This will never happen because he doesn’t have a CBS connection (and is more associated with NBC), but I think John Mulaney would be a terrific host. He has Broadway bona fides, does great comic musical numbers on SNL, and knows how to do a sharp monologue.

Great choice! She’s also a Tony nominee and showed on SNL that she has hosting chops.
ReplyCopy URLMay 4, 2022 at 11:28 am #1204941948Wonderful choice! Even if DeBose doesn’t win the guest actress in a comedy series Emmy this year for hosting SNL, she’ll have a very good shot for variety special (live) next year. And it’ll be extremely interesting if this triple threat who started her professional career on the stage completes the EGO in EGOT, including for hosting the Tonys, before ever winning a Tony herself.
ReplyCopy URLMay 4, 2022 at 12:50 pm #1204942014That’s wild! Direct and tangible effects of an Oscar win. Thrilled for Ariana DeBose! Her manic, theater-kid energy will be through the roof on show night though, so be warned. Stunned! I was expecting James Corden again b/c of his news, TBH.

It would also be ironic if she becomes an EGOT champion just like Rita Moreno.
ReplyCopy URLMay 4, 2022 at 1:43 pm #1204942047I actually did wonder if Ariana DeBose would be a possibility now that she is commercially viable to the mainstream. I’m certainly curious to see how she’ll be used as host. I enjoyed her guest appearance on Saturday Night Live from a few months ago. Especially this parody of The Sound of Music she participated in.
ReplyCopy URLMay 4, 2022 at 7:20 pm #1204942307Perhaps DeBose and Rita Moreno could jointly present the award for Best Musical?
ReplyCopy URLMay 4, 2022 at 7:35 pm #1204942311^If that were to happen, it would be the first time the host got to present Best Musical since Whoopi Goldberg back in 2008. Chita Rivera could even join Rita and Ariana.
