Now that the predictions center has launchd for this year’s Tony nominations, I thought I’d start a thread dedicated to the categories Gold Derby isn’t letting us predict nominations for. As of now, I’m basing my guesses on what has already opened. I’m not taking into account any production that hasn’t started performances on Broadway yet (with the exception of A Strange Loop) because they’re all sights unseen at this point. So here’s where my predictions for the below-the-line categories currently stand…

    Best Orchestrations:
    David Cullen-Company
    Tom Curran-Six
Simon Hale-Girl From the North Country
    Charlie Rosen-A Strange Loop
    Michael Starobin-Flying Over Sunset

Best Sound Design of a Musical:
Simon Baker-Girl From the North Country
    Ian Dickinson for Autograph-Company
    Paul Gatehouse-Six
    Alex Hawthorn-A Strange Loop
    Gareth Owen-MJ

Best Sound Design of a Play:
    Mikhail Fiksel-Dana H.
Lee Kinney & Sanae Yamada-Is This a Room
Nick Powell & Dominic Bilkey-The Lehman Trilogy
    Dan Moses Schreier-Trouble in Mind
    Mikaal Sulaiman-Take Me Out

Best Lighting Design of a Musical:
    Neil Austin-Company
    Tim Deiling-Six
Mark Henderson-Girl From the North Country
    Natasha Katz-MJ
    Jen Schriever-A Strange Loop

Best Lighting Design of a Play:
Jiyoun Chang-for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf
    Jon Clark-The Lehman Trilogy
Ryan O’Gara-Thoughts of a Colored Man
    Kathy A. Perkins-Trouble in Mind
    Kenneth Posner-Take Me Out

Best Scenic Design of a Musical:
    Beowulf Boritt & 59 Productions-Flying Over Sunset
    Bunny Christie-Company
    Arnulfo Maldonado-A Strange Loop
    Derek McLane & Peter Nigrini-MJ
Rae Smith-Girl From the North Country

Best Scenic Design of a Play:
    John Lee Beatty-Plaza Suite
Robert Brill-Thoughts of a Colored Man
Es Devlin & Luke Halls-The Lehman Trilogy
    Arnulfo Maldonado-Trouble in Mind
    Scott Pask-American Buffalo

Best Costume Design of a Musical:
    Toni-Leslie James-Flying Over Sunset
    Santo Loquasto-The Music Man
    Gabriella Slade-Six
Rae Smith-Girl From the North Country
    Paul Tazewell-MJ

Best Costume Design of a Play:
    Dede Ayite-Chicken & Biscuits
    Jane Greenwood-Plaza Suite
    Katrina Lindsay-The Lehman Trilogy
    Jennifer Moeller-Clyde’s
    Emilio Sosa-Trouble in Mind

I’ll be sure to have these updated as soon as more productions start performances on Broadway this season.

I’m betting on Six for Costume Design and FOS for Scenic Design.
