On the one hand, War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and Harry Potter & the Cursed Child each won Best Play based on the strength of their stagecraft as opposed to their writing. On the other hand, the nominators snubbed Network, recognizing the achievement in its lead performance and stagecraft, but knew the script itself wasn’t good enough (which I successfully predicted would be the case).
Curious Incident was an exceptionally well-written play. I might have a few minor quibbles with the scripts of War Horse and Cursed Child, but they are also very well written. I don’t think you can really argue they won “based on the strength of their stagecraft as opposed to their writing.” The stagecraft was a bonus, a way for these productions to feel especially theatrical and take advantage of the medium. In an alternate reality where we had a separate category for script, I think the only one that might have lost the script race was War Horse (probably to Jerusalem). But it’s also likely that these three would have taken home both Play and Script.
This year’s Best Play race is going to be brutal because we have a true embarrassment of riches. There’s many ways that the category could shake out. So unless there are multiple ties, there are some exceptional scripts which will sadly miss out on a nomination.

I agree… War Horse had the least strongest writing, but still great. I think Leopoldstadt will take Best Play because of great reviews, Tom Stoppard, Holocaust play, and most important of all: it’s been a MASSIVE hit for a play – selling even better than many of the musicals.

ReplyCopy URLMarch 19, 2023 at 7:32 pm #1205357422If this was the early 2000s where voters championed big musical comedies adapted from popular films like The Producers, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Hairspray, and Spamalot, I’d say Some Like It Hot has a shot. Although with a lot of the Best Musical winners from this past decade, they’ve gone for more challenging pieces that producers took a risk on by bringing them to Broadway. I’m expecting the latter trend to continue this year with Kimberly Akimbo.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 19, 2023 at 7:51 pm #1205357435I agree that the trend favors challenging pieces. After Kinky Boots won Aladdin and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical were outdone by A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, a small-scale show with more obscure source material. Then six of the next seven Best Musical winners were Off-Broadway transfers (the only exception was Moulin Rouge!, which only won because the season was cut short by COVID). Three of those winners–Fun Home, Dear Evan Hansen and A Strange Loop–had single-digit casts, like Kimberly Akimbo.
