Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater are teaming up with playwright James Graham on a stage musical adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novel, Animal Farm. No timeline has been revealed yet, but a workshop is set to take place sometime this spring.

Cats aside, singing animals are probably better left to the world of animated film. Though I agree, who would want to hear this story sung?

I actually saw a straight play adaptation on the Lower East Side last year. That seemed to be the way to do it.

What kind of costumes did they wear for that production? I’m always curious, when it comes to people playing animals onstage, how they depict those animals.

They just wore black, their body gestures indicated the animals.
