Just got back from seeing the new West Side Story. Even though she probably has only about 10 minutes of screen time, she’s fantastic in it.

Celebrating a very important birthday today is LaChanze. An actress with 10 Broadway credits to her name. She’s earned 3 Tony Award nominations for her performances in the original productions of Once on This Island, The Color Purple (which resulted in a win), and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. She can currently be seen on the main stem in Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of Trouble in Mind, which could earn her a fourth Tony nomination this spring. LaChanze turns 60 today.

On this day in 1981, the original production of Dreamgirls opened at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway. Directed, co-choreographed, and co-produced by Micheal Bennett, the cast included Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, Ben Harney, Cleavant Derricks, Obba Babatundé, Deborah Burrell, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Tony Franklin, and Charles Randolph-Wright. The show went on to receive 13 Tony Award nominations (including Best Musical) the following year, and ended up winning 6 accolades overall. The production was a commercial hit, running for 1,521 performances after closing on August 11th, 1985. In the years since, Dreamgirls has received a resurgence thanks to a 2006 Academy Award-winning film adaptation as well as the Act I finale, ‘And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going’, becoming an anthem.

Dreamgirls losing the Best Musical Tony to Nine is the equivalent of Brokeback Mountain losing the Best Picture Oscar to Crash. In any other year, Nine would’ve been an acceptable winner, but not against Dreamgirls.

I don’t think that’s an appropriate analogy at all. There are people out there who just flat out hate Crash for a variety of reasons (they’ve even ranked it in last place of the 2005 Best Picture nominees). The fact that it beat Brokeback Mountain makes them feel even worse about the former film. Whereas no one that I’m aware of has similar feelings towards Nine. I’d say that Tony race is probably more similar to La La Land vs. Moonlight at the 2016 Oscars where this crowd pleasing musical lost to this weighty piece.

Celebrating a very important birthday today is actress/singer Yvonne Elliman. She is best known for originating the role of Mary Magdalene in Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1970 rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar. That’s a role she’s played on the original concept album, in various concert presentations, the 1971 Broadway production, and Norman Jewison’s 1973 film adaptation. Yvonne Elliman turns 70 today.

On this day in 1982, Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat opened at the Royale (now Bernard B. Jacobs) Theatre on Broadway. Even though this was the third musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber to have made it to New York, they both actually wrote it before Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. The original cast was led by Bill Hutton and Laurie Beechman. The production received 7 Tony Award nominations (including Best Musical), and ran for 747 performances after closing on September 4th, 1983.
