On this day in 2008, the smash hit West End musical, Billy Elliot, opened on Broadway. The project reunited director Stephen Daldry and writer Lee Hall from the original film, and Elton John collaborated with Hall on the score.
The end result received universal acclaim from critics. Billy Elliot also received 15 Tony nominations, which ended up tying it with The Producers as the most nominated production in history (though that record would later be broken by Hamilton). The show then went on to win 10 Tony Awards (including Best Musical).November 13, 2018 at 9:03 am #1202674184
