CBS Will Air This in Place of Tony Awards

A sing-along version of the 1978 film “Grease,” starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. :-/

This could have been a perfect opportunity to do a Tonys retrospective of best performances or most memorable historic wins, though that might only appeal to die-head awards watchers. Or air a benefit Zoom concert to support the American Theater Wing, Broadway League, or the Actors Fund. Instead, CBS does this nonsense. The decision has upset many Broadway actors.

So, is this a good programming replacement for the Tonys or an ill-advised one?

I don’t know how big of an audience there would be for a Tony Awards retrospective or a benefit. Plus, with CBS bringing back the Sunday Night Movie for the time being, it does make sense for them to run that programing block every week.

CBS probably doesn’t own the footage of previous Tony Awards or the music rights for rebroadcast. Meanwhile Grease is a film in their corporate family. This isn’t even an issue. CBS partners with the American Theatre Wing for the live show, not some janky clip show.

Due to current tragic events going on in the world, Broadway On Demand has postponed their Tony Awards celebration to a later date.
