Inspired by Luke Dias’ recent thread about classic roles that have never been nominated, I’ve decided to start a similar one dedicated to the roles that haven’t managed to win a Tony Award (yet). In order to qualify, the play/musical has to have been produced on Broadway multiple times while the character needs to have been Tony nominated at least once. Examples I can think of are:

Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie
    Billy Bigelow in Carousel
    Bobby in Company
    Buddy Plummer in Follies
Charity Hope Valentine in Sweet Charity
    Curly in Oklahoma!
Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady
George in Sunday in the Park with George
    Guido Contini in Nine
    Jean Valjean in Les Misérables
    John Adams in 1776*
Lilli Vanessi/Katharine in Kiss Me, Kate
    Maria in West Side Story
Nathan Detroit in Guys & Dolls

*When William Daniels was nominated for his performance as John Adams in the original Broadway production of 1776, it was as a featured actor due to the rules back then of only having those billed above the title compete in lead while those billed below the title compete in featured. In response to that, Daniels got in touch with Alexander Cohen (the producer of the Tonys at the time) to successfully withdraw himself from the race as he knew he was in the wrong category.

So which classic role(s) that have been Tony nominated at least once from a show that has been produced on Broadway multiple times are you most surprised hasn’t won yet?

For a role that is as brilliantly written as this, it shocks me that it never makes someone win a Tony. I guess that it’s been rarely performed on Broadway so far. I can only hope that there will be a great adaptation of it in a near future, and it better have a star-making performance from an underrated/unknown actor.

When I was in 10th grade, my high school did a production of Guys & Dolls, and we used the cast recording from the 1992 Broadway revival to learn the songs. Just from listening to that cast recording, I feel that Nathan Lane should’ve won the Tony that year because he was fantastic as Nathan Detroit. At least Faith Prince deservedly won a Tony for her performance as Adelaide.
