We all know Meryl Streep is a true queen amongst great actresses. Anyone who says she’s not clearly doesn’t know what great acting looks like. Anyway, with Meryl Streep playing Broadway diva Dee Dee Allen in The Prom, that made me think: Meryl hasn’t been on Broadway herself in a long time. Let’s say she did come back, and let’s say she came back in a revival of an iconic piece of theater. What iconic theater role from the past would you like to see her portray? For me, I’d like to see her take on Martha from Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? I have no doubt she would get a standing ovation night after night and would probably win a Tony and make her the next member of the Triple Crown Club. But what about the rest of you?

I would say Long Day’s Journey into Night except it was revived relatively recently. Maybe Claire from The Visit?

I remember hearing rumors a while ago that Meryl would be open to a Broadway return, but she would prefer to do so in a new work as opposed to a revival. Which I’m guessing is because she would like to help shine a light on new voices in the theater as opposed to doing something obvious like classic works. Though if it has to be in revivals, I do agree with the idea of her playing Martha in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. I can also see her as Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie. I don’t know if she would be willing to commit to a year long run in a musical, but I could see her starring as the title character in Mame as well as either one of the female leads (Sally or Phyllis) in Follies.

I’m probably wrong but I think I heard once that the reason Meryl Streep hasn’t returned to broadway is because she suffers from stage fright, but I would pay top dollar to see her on stage.

Nope she is an amazing theater actress. Loved doing plays at Yale there are even pictures of her disguised etc.. she was cast because of a play she did while in Uni.Her career just went from strength to strength and even today she is one of the most sought-after old actresses in Hollywood.

Correction: she’s one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood, regardless of her age.

She’s done the shows in Central Park multiple times.
