La La Land, the 2016 Academy Award winner for Best Pic-oh, wrong movie, is going to receive a Broadway stage adaptation. Marc Platt, who produced the original movie, is involved with this project. The book will be written by Ayad Akhtar and Matthew Decker. It will feature music from the film’s composer, Justin Hurwitz and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Bartlett Sher is set to be at the helm.

I suppose they’ll use the songs from the original film, like so many movicals do. The songs are okay, though “Another Day of Sun” sounds a lot like “Welcome to the Night” from Sweet Smell of Success and the audition song is rather close to “The Rainbow Connection.” La La Land was a polarizing film, and I’m in the camp of those who find it overrated, with leads who couldn’t carry a musical in a shopping cart, the problematic aspect of a white guy “saving jazz,” not to mention a plot that dragged at times.
