John Berendt’s 1994 novel, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, is being developed into a stage musical. Taylor Mac is writing the book with the score being written by Jason Robert Brown. Rob Ashford is currently attached to direct it. Additional creative team members will be announced at a later date. An invitation only industry reading is set to take place on May 12th and 13th.

Fun Fact: This is the second time Jason Robert Brown is co-authoring a stage musical adaptation of a novel that previously served as the basis for a Clint Eastwood film following The Bridges of Madison County.

This holds a lot of promise for me. The property seems ideal for musical treatment and the writing team feels like a match for the material. I’d love to see David Korins do the sets. I think his architectural take and plays on perspective would suit the Savannah settings well. And Catherine Zuber could do some killer costuming for the Savannah society elite.
