Hannah Waddingham as Cora Hoover Hooper, Emma Pittman as Fay Apple, Corey Cott as J. Bowden Hapgood, Sebastian Arcelus as Dr. Detmold, Brian d’Arcy James as Comptroller Schub, Norbert Leo Butz as Treasurer Cooley, Norm Lewis as Police Chief Magruder, it time for a Anyone Can Whistle Revival

I’m honestly not familiar with Anyone Can Whistle at all, so I can’t really respond with my own casting ideas. Although at this point, it would be really cool when Hannah Waddingham eventually returns to the stage given all the extra exposure she’s received in recent years with her roles on Game of Thrones and most especially Ted Lasso. I was lucky enough to have seen Hannah in Spamalot back in January of 2008. At the time, she had just joined the Broadway production as The Lady of the Lake after having originated that role in London’s West End.

I know nothing about that show, other than the fact that Angela Lansbury was in the cast. Many people often think of Merrily We Roll Along as Sondheim’s biggest Broadway bomb, but a lot of those people probably don’t know about Anyone Can Whistle’s existence.

It did have the shortest Broadway run of a Sondheim show, nine performances. Still I think it’s due for a revival.

It’s also worth noting that during the very short run of that show, composer/lyricist Jerry Herman caught a performance, and felt he found his Mame in Angela Lansbury.

There’s no way this will get a commercial revival. It’s too difficult and flawed. Sondheim has often involved himself in revisions of his shows for productions around the country, but not this one that I’ve ever heard. Perhaps he doesn’t think it’s worth revisiting.

Encores! did it in 2010 with Donna Murphy, Sutton Foster and Raul Esparza. It’s had a few other minor productions, but mostly concert performances.

The best things to come out of it were the songs “Everybody Says Don’t” and “There Won’t Be Trumpets,” so maybe we should just leave it at that. “Trumpets” was actually cut in previews, but found its way into the cabaret songbook over time.
