Though as I mentioned before, the administration committee made new rules at the final eligibility meeting last year. The rule was that if there were at least nine eligible candidates in any given category, then there would automatically be five nominees. Which was the reason why we saw expansions in Best Play, Best Revival of a Play, Best Orchestrations, and all the design awards. Whether or not that rule will continue to be in use this year remains to be seen.

Though it would be pretty ridiculous if that rule was thrown out the window this year. It has been a strong season for new plays, that the Best Play category could benefit having a fifth slot this year. Unlike last year where the slate of contenders weren’t as strong, but we still had five Best Play nominees anyway.

It depends on the rulings for Constitution and Shreck.

For musical there will likely be four nominees.

If there are only four Best Musical nominees this year, I expect them to be Ain’t Too Proud, Hadestown, The Prom, and Tootsie. Though since there are 11 eligible candidates this year, I’m guessing Be More Chill takes the fifth slot (if there is one).

Who I think will get in outside of the Top 5 (or 4)…

    Best Musical: Be More Chill

Not a critics darling but a hit with fans

Best Actor (Musical): Derick Baskin – Ain’t Too Proud & Will Roland for Be More Chill

I think we are all underestimating Ain’t Too Proud due to having a “bored of” bias against jukebox musicals. Will Roland came close to a Tony nom for Dear Evan Hansen and this is now his 2nd hit show. He’ll either get nominated or come close.

Best Actress (Musical): Samantha Barks – Pretty Woman

This will be a consolation nomination for the show.

Best Featured Actor (Musical): George Salazar – Be More Chill & Will Brill – Oklahoma!

Look, even if Be More Chill misses out on Best Musical (which it probably will), this is the one nomination that the show will get, if for no other reason than the standout “Michael in the Bathroom” number.

Additionally, I think Oklahoma will rack up a ton of nominations for its actors, same way that the revival of Carousel did last year. I think the actors in this production stand a better shot at scoring a nomination than ones in contemporary productions such as Beetlejuice and Tootsie. I almost expect this category to be filled with men from Oklahoma! and Hadestown.

I never thought Will Roland was in the running for DEH, and I don’t think he’s in the running for this show. I think if the fifth nominee isn’t Reeve Carney it’ll be Derrick Baskin.

We don’t have any rulings for Shreck yet. And Ain’t too Proud got raves while Be More Chill did not. I think there’ll be four.

I wouldn’t say ATP got raves, but it got mixed to good reviews.

I read through all the reviews of both Ain’t Too Proud and Be More Chill and found them to be just about even – I am predicting both will be nominated for Best Musical (along with Hadestown, The Prom and Tootsie).
